I updated my Since Last Visit hack, fixing a couple of minor bugs. I also posted a version that doesn’t use JavaScript – basically a WordPress 1.0+ compatible version of the old hack.

If you are using this and seeing ‘cannot send headers, headers already sent…’ errors, you are calling the initial functions too late. You have to call them before any content has been sent to the browser.
