WordPress CSS Style Competition Winners

Posted in: WordPress

I’m pleased to announce the winners of the first WordPress CSS Style Competition:

The Winners

  1. Pink Lilies
  2. Rubric
  3. Human Condition

Honorable Mention

There were many wonderful entries making the judging very difficult. These rose to the top using a combined score of votes from the people who are putting up the prize money, your downloads, and cross-browser compatibility.

Of course, the real winners here are the WordPress users who now have 38 new styles from this contest (45 total) they can use with the default WordPress template.

Several people have expressed regret that they didn’t hear about the contest in time and weren’t able to finish their design by the deadline. Please continue to send in designs. I’m happy to post them and continue to grow the wonderful library of styles we have. Maybe we’ll have another contest in the future.

Thanks so much to everyone who entered and to Matt, Geof, Dougal and isma for their contributions to the awards.

Quick note: you have typos in the links for Dark Fire (no underscore) and Mars Spirit (replace underscore with a dash).

Glad to see that some of my favorites were winners :)

    Cornflatulations to the winners!

It was fun being a sponsor, and two of my top three [Pink Lilies and Rubric] made the cut.

I am, at present, using Silver Is the New Black to make a default three-column layout for WP.

since the comments for the other post are closed, I would just like to say that eris was in no way being brash. I completely agree with her statement that the judging criteria was a bit unclear.

The way I personally interpreted it was that you wanted styles for the WP community that would be the most versatile, and most accessible to all. That’s why I chose to make an imageless, simply thinking that it would make life a bit easier for some people.

Had i known that you were judging more on the merits of the design itself, rather than how wide of an audience the design could appeal to, I certainly would have used images, and made the design more detailed.

This is just a suggestion, but in future contests, I suggest making clear what the designs are for. Are you looking for a design that will appeal to the most people? Or a specific demographic.

As it was, the winning designs did appeal to specific demographics of people. I am pretty certain, that other designers would have submitted different styles, or gone about the whole process differently had they known this.

I don’t wish to be a “sore loser” because I really liked the winning designs, and I do think they deserved to win. However, for future contests, I’d recommend making this clearer, just so that it doesn’t become a bone of contention after the contest is over.

I don’t know how to make this more clear: there was no guidance given regarding the “type” of design intentionally to allow for more creativity.

  19. eris adds this Comment:

and i think everyone understands that. but is it possible to entertain the notion that perhaps next time there should be more clear guidelines?

I wouldn’t recommend changing around the CSS, it looks good for some people, but it really has to fit with your site, that means designing several good CSS templates! A better use of your time might be to make one good CSS and layout.
