Running threats get their teammates better pitches. With a speedy guy on first your number three and four hitters are going to see more fast balls then off speed junk because any good base runner is going to take advantage of off speed pitches. That could have something to do with his opinion.

A couple comments:

1. Whatever happened to manufacturing runs. Get to first. Sacrifice or steal second. Then get the guy home. Harold seems to have ignored that aspect of baseball. The Milwaukee Brewers are actually manufacturing runs this year. It's cool to watch.

2. The DH sucks. Frank Thomas and Edgar Martinez are both classic DH's. They hit for average and get a fair amount of HR's. If you're too old to round bases and score runs... you're too old to hit. That's

3. Having players on the bases makes the defense and pitcher act differently. Watch the pitcher and defense for the first batter of an inning, then watch when there's a baserunner.

4. The hitters with a high OBP might be adding to the pitcher's pitch count. Taking a few more pitches than a hack and slash hitter.

Who knows... all I know is that I agree with Alex.

Harold Reynolds discounts sabermetrics because he sees them as a threat to his understanding of the game. That reaction is stupid. I am tempted to say that Harold himself is stupid, but for me to say that without knowing the man would, itself, be stupid.
