Tempted

Posted in: Dog, General

On Friday I golfed with an older gentleman who has a miniature australian shepherd puppy. Today we went over to his house to meet ‘Buddy’. Buddy was pretty awesome, he’s a small dog that can play like a big dog and was very sweet tempered. The breeders he came from just had another litter, which makes the tempation to get a dog of our own quite strong. Our initial plan was to wait until next spring, but we shall see. :)

You seem to be good with dogs based on your “Found Dog” post. I’d say you should get a dog now that you have your own house and work at home. It’ll be nice to have some extra company during the day. Once you get a dog, you’ll probably wonder how you got by without one before.

If you do get a pup, my advice is to take it easy when you play with it. Don’t over do it and get it too excited all the time. When they’re small and cute, it’s hard to resist playing with them. But once they get older, and bigger, you won’t be as eager to play with a 50-100lb dog. Unfortunately, you’re still the same person in the eyes of the dog and it’ll be more active and playful. It’s harder to train a dog as it gets older. I’d just try to keep that in mind when playing with a pup, and try not to get it too wild.

Dogs actually are like their owners. Loud obnoxious people generally have loud obnoxious dogs. Quiet and reserved people generally have quiet reserved dogs. At least that’s what I’ve noticed. As always, there’s an exception to every rule….

Thanks Ed. We’re only looking at ~20 lb breeds, and training is definitely a priority.

Yea, it didn’t sound like you guys were looking at big dogs. I’ve only had one small dog, the other 3 dogs we’ve had were German Shepherds. Those can get really big. You don’t want to be around one of those when they start jumping on you. :)

BTW, WordPress doesn’t seem to like tilde’s (~) in the “website” field when I’m leaving a comment. For some reason, they’re getting stripped or dropped everytime I enter something there. In my comments above, there should be a tilde right before ‘edao’ in the website field. I thought I made a typo the first time, but I double-checked the second time to make sure I wasn’t.

    Puppy
We put down a deposit on a Miniature Australian Shepherd puppy last night. She’s a blue merle, and should look a bit like her mom.

We’ll be bringing her home in October when she’s about 10 weeks old, so we have time to get the house in orde…

Mini Aussies are the way to go! You don’t have to worry about it getting to the big dog size so just play away. Mini Aussies are only 20 -40 pounds (usually 30 or under) and stand only 17″ high at most. They are very content just chasing a ball or toy and bringing back to you. You can easily do this in the house so you aren’t the one running around.
