Keeper Acquisition

In response to Tom’s comment, here’s how I got everyone. Many of them I picked in the draft before they were superstars and kept them.

Alex Rodriguez: I took him with the third pick in the first round of our first keeper draft in 2001 (after Pedro and Randy Johnson). I’ve kept him since that draft.

Vladimir Guerrero: I took him with the third pick in the third round of that 2001 draft and kept him since.

Bobby Abreu: I took him in the fourth round of the 2001 draft and have kept him since.

Jeff Bagwell: Acquired via trade for Paul Konerko and Carlos Lee during the 2002 season and kept since then.

Rafael Furcal: Drafted in the 14th round of the 2003 draft and kept last year.

Tim Hudson: I traded for Mike Mussina in the 2001 season, then traded Mussina and a closer for Hudson. I’ve kept Hudson since then.

Pedro Martinez: I traded JD Drew in a deal for Brian Giles in 2001, then traded Giles straight up for Pedro at the All-Star break in 2002. This was when Pedro was having arm trouble and looked to be almost out of baseball. I’ve kept him since.

Barry Zito: Drafted in the 9th round of the 2001 draft (when he’d only pitched a half a season), then traded for Troy Glaus at the end of 2001 and reacquired in a deal for Cliff Floyd before the 2002 season and kept since.

Curt Schilling: Traded Matt Morris (drafted in the 22nd round in 2001 and kept until the trade) and Austin Kearns for him during the the stretch run last year and kept him.

Johan Santana: Free agent pickup last season.

You can see all the keepers on the draft page. A number of teams had very good cores this year, but had some bad luck. I’m glad I was able to pick up Burnett and Morneau as free agents, I plan to keep them next year.
