My 8week old puppy, from the humane society, came home with tapeworms and flea infestation and a hacking cough once a day. After the well visit at the vet he was prescribed Clavamox 62.5mg bid for kennel cough, Capstar 2-25 lbs-1 tab, Droncit 34mg 1 1/2 tabs, and a dose of Revolution. After 1st dose of clavamox the hacking a vomiting increased to all day with emesis of Tbs or so of clear to beige fluid, and almost convulsion like activity in his abdomen. He became very lethargic and appetite decreased dramatically. Back to the vet today for iv fluids (he lost 1lb in 2 days), ampicillan, baytril, cerenia, and nebulizer treatments for 2-3 days with isolation status and critical care monitoring. I am concerned about the cerenia since he is so young and how that may lead to more issue w/age (bone marrow hypoplasia-doc called it "cartilage issues") and since I saw greenish discharge from nostrils this morning-could it be distemper? I don't want him to suffer if it is a viral infection...Is that a risk I should be considering?

I have one I alaways try to Keep the crate out of direct sunlight and away from drafts. Place it in a cool area near an area of "people activity". Make sure you can hear the pup while he is in the crate. If the room is warm, it is even warmer in the crate. Dogs do not sweat - their main way to regulate body temperature is thru panting. If you see your dog panting in his crate, he is hot and can "over heat" if you are not careful. I keep the A/C on during the summer, and I still use a fan occasionally to circulate the air in the room where the crate is kept at night.

when i bought my pup he was fine, healthy and quite a chubby little chap. He was fine the first couple of days, but then he woke up one morning and started throwing up and has REALLY runny diahrea. I would take him straight to the vet but i am working in a small city in china, so there isn't a vet... I have been feeding him water through a syringe so he doesn't dehydrate but he won't eat... This is the second day. any advise would be greatly appreciated. Nikki

Thanks Alex.

The next day she began feeling much better! It must have been the vaccine she got earlier.

Thanks again,
Lora

If it doesn't pass in a day or so, I'd take your pup in to the vet.

My puppy got sick this afternoon and is throwing up and has REALLY runny diahrea.

We just rescued her from a shelter last Friday, and we took her the same day to start her puppy shots--including the parvo vaccine.

Is it possible that she got sick from the vaccine this late? Please tell me she doesn't have Parvo. I'm trying to keep her drinking water, but she's throwing up everything she gets in!

Advice would be great.

Fabulous photos!

Have you considered trying to desensitize your dog to thunderstorms?

Terry Ryan, a trainer with whom I co-wrote a dog training book, has a CD of thunderstorm noises. If I understand correctly, you start by playing them very softly, at the level where they don't stress your dog, then very, very gradually (taking as many days, weeks or months as needed) raise the volume.

Let me know if you try it & how it works out as I am planning to put up dog posts on my new blog and this would be a great topic!

Nice pup. And kind of cold-resistant (I like her lying on the snow, I think, that I feel how cold is there :) )
