Dear Text Editor, Don’t Fix My Mistakes

July 9, 2005

Overheard on the BBEdit mailing list:

I have always considered the fact that BBEdit didn’t fix my “mistakes” to be one of it’s finest qualities.

I completely concur, this is perhaps why I have yet to make friends with a :scare: real :/scare: IDE.

i detest microsoft’s tendencies in ui design for precisely this reason. the fourth most annoying thing in the world (an approximation) is Windows’ default text selection behavior. if the selection extends over a space, it “knows” that you really mean to select the entire next word and kindly does it for you without asking, so you can’t select a whole word and a partial word next to it. or something like that.

makes me want to own a gun.

as for IDEs … viva Codewarrior! =)

This was one of the reasons why, when I first tried it to decide which text editor to use, I didn’t like Emacs. It automatically did the closing }’s in my CSS, and not in the place that I like to put it. In the end I picked Vim and GVim, and hate Emacs. :)

Cool quote smilies, by the way. Nice touch.

You should have looked more carefully @ Emacs, all that stuff is configurable.
