I put those into my own version for my site. When I grabbed the files to submit the theme I completely forgot about the links in the footer.php. It was a seo test I was working on. It won one of the awards earlier this year, didn't it? I've been using it (and adapted it for three columns) almost as long as I've been using WP, although one problem I've seen with it is that the right side-bar ends up at the bottom of the blog, below all the other content, on IE on Windows pre-XP.
