“As Needed” EV-DO

Posted in: Technology

I limped through my recent DSL outage by booting into Windows on my MacBook and tethering through my BlackBerry (wouldn’t it be nice to be able to tether in Mac OS X?), but I sorely missed the EV-DO connection I had with Sprint.

I wish Sprint or Verizon would offer an EV-DO plan that only charged you each month if you used it. I generally go in spurts where I need to use a mobile connection like this1, and then I’ll go several months without needing it again.

As far as I can tell, nothing like this is available - anyone have any inside info?

This would be fantastic. As a ‘one-man IT department’ at my employer, I often need to fire up my laptop from the road. Currently I tether via Bluetooth with my Motorola E815, but at around 112Kbps, it’s less than adequate for remoting to corporate or other branch offices. It’s not nearly enough to warrant a $40/month for dedicated service, but if some carrier would offer some sort of prepaid plan, I’d get on board with that.
