I’ve been doing a little work on a proof-of-concept for a new fully WordPress driven alexking.org site. I’m working off of the current WP trunk (”trunk” is the place bugs are created in any software), so naturally I ran into a couple of minor issues.
After a brief IM conversation with Ryan to make sure I was fixing the issues correctly, I submitted a patch and minutes later it was committed. Fantastic!

Why am I forced to have this entry linked into my WP? It really doesn’t interest me whatsoever, but I appear to have no choice. Is that OS or is it a form of dictatorship?

Well file a Trac ticket, rip it out of the Dashboard code, or install Textpattern. You’re not forced anything.

pide: You can edit your wp-admin/index.php to get rid of or add another feed to your dashboard, because as stated, WordPress is open source so you may edit and set up your wordpress installation just the way you want it.
And if you come up with some brilliant or just an idea/ patch to improve WordPress you may submit it to Trac just like Alex did.

And in a related topic, a lot of themes today are based on open source web design templates - which is another great example that open source rocks!

Open Source does indeed rock. It is encouraging to see the success of an Open Source platform such as WP, hopefully inspiring a stream of future Open Source models.

Well you can always change your feed for your dashboard. I change mine to what matters most for me (mostly business and finance blogs)

I agree, open source helps us build the future. The great thing about open source is that it allows everyone to build on other’s ideas, true collaboration. I really have no problem with alex’s blog in my console, it seems that anyone who blogs would be interested in what he has to say.

Randy, probably around the time I stop testing out back-end stuff and start designing the front-end stuff.

Alex: sounds good.
What sort of back-end stuff are you doing? Something that would be generally useful or ako-specific things?

Alex adds this Comment:
I’m not sure if it will be useful to others or not, but I’ll probably write it up if/when I get it all working.

If you ever finalise your tweak of WP to serve as an CMS, be sure to release it for all of us to enjoy! *smile*

I also love reading Alex’s blog. And long live open source! I too would also be interested in any tweaks you come up with, most definitely post them. Thanks and keep up the great work!
