Our pup used to get somewhat stymied when the door to her crate was closed, but sometime in the last few months she learned to open the door so she can get inside. Smart girl. 
We still have her go in the crate when we leave, but we keep the door open and she can roam free while we’re gone. She knows the drill and goes in on her own most of the time.
