Favicon Poll - Fun or Boring?

Posted in: Crowd Favorite

I launched the Crowd Favorite site with a somewhat boring “CF” favicon1.

"Boring" Favicon

I’m not terribly keen on it, so I put up a more fun icon using a hand from the crowd lower down on the page.

"Fun" favicon

I think I like the hand better, but it has some drawbacks too.

What do you think? Have your say in the poll…

  1. I’ve had good success with this online converter for creating favicons. [back]

From the looks of it, it is meant to be a serious site. I would suggest you keep something recognizable, and that matches the site better. Also, what does the hand even represent?

Personally, I find the CF one more instantly recognizable. Isn’t that the purpose of icons?

I voted for the fun one because I don’t like the way the CF one looks.

I like the fun one better but it’s a but hard to see… not thinking a hand with all the fingers is really the best thing to try and fit in a 16×16 icon.

Also, instead of using that converter, a favicon is just a .bmp with the extension changed to .ico… some browsers will also support .png and other formats.

Conner– the hand is obviously that of a cheering crowd member. ;)

Brian– I think that’s my problem with it too; that and the bastardizing of the logotype.

Maybe there’s a 3rd, better solution out there.

How about a thumbs-up hand from the crowd? Or a we’re #1 foam finger!

    Just a thought Alex?

It’s cool that you are asking for opinions from the public, but do keep in mind that this is eventually gonna be YOUR company (or you and your business partner, rather) so if something is boring, don’t go with it. Keep looking for something that eventually the two of you will like.

Personally? Not a fan of either. Time for a third? =)

I think the hand is a better choice.

Jasmeet, Alex has been running his business for 4 years now - the URL issue was a real one where he asked for an opinion, but it doesn’t get more trivial than a favicon. I don’t think you need to worry - just look at the site and brand he created without any public input.

You need a 3rd vote for neither :)

I like the ‘CF’ better because it actually means something (at least to me).

The hand is certainly more fun, but a bit ambiguous… ‘CF’ I associate with the company name. What was that site with the hand waving at me again? Hmm…

Oh, and nice link! I think it deserved more than a footnote. :)

    a shadow hand puppet would be a nice 3rd option… it’s a small canvass though (16×16).
