I’m very pleased to announce that ShareThis 2.0 is now available!
This new version has a ton of great features, including:
- A new WordPress plugin.
- WordPress users can download the new plugin here.
- Support for non-WordPress platforms.
- This was by far the #1 requested feature, and you can use the ShareThis widget for other blogging platforms or for regular HTML web sites. Go the the Get the Button page and follow the simple steps.
- Choose your social web services and easy color configuration.
- ShareThis has a simple online configuration tool that allows you to choose which social web services you want to offer links to and allow you to set colors to match you site’s theme.
- Sending using AIM, SMS, Facebook and MySpace.
- Yes, people use more communication channels than just e-mail.
- Stats for publishers.
- With tracking features to keep track of the sharing activity on your site, ShareThis will be offering stats for publishers.
- Import address books.
- You can import your buddy lists to make sharing to AIM, Facebook and MySpace easy.
You can see that lots of these features wouldn’t be available without the great sharing platform being built at ShareThis.com. You can see why it made sense to work with the great folks at ShareThis.
It’s a pretty impressive upgrade, and this is really just the tip of the iceberg for ShareThis. There are a lot of exciting things on the roadmap for publishers (including some advanced customization options) and users, and Crowd Favorite is proud to be a part of it - stay tuned!

To place the widget where you want to in your theme (like I’ve done on this site), you can use the following code:
<?php echo st_widget(); ?>Note, this is unsupported in the current version and will work a little smoother and have a proper template tag in a future release.

Alex, are their any plain English instructions on migrating from Share This 1.4 to ShareThis 2.0 without having to be a PHP maven?
I am curious to try the new version (though the old one has worked fine), but I wonder how/if this can be done easily.
Peace,
Gene

Gene, I tried to find a way to not sound like a smart @$$ in my reply but failed so I figured I should just embrace it.
Here you go, a 3 step process in plain English for migrating from Share This 1.4 to ShareThis 2.0:
1. Deactivate Share This 1.4 from your plugins page.
2. Download ShareThis 2.0 and upload it to your WordPress install.
3. Activate ShareThis 2.0 from your plugins page.
There you have it!

Matt Wiebe adds this Comment:
I like the new direction this is going, but I’ll just wait for a future release with a little more dummy proof customizability built into the WP end of things (as already mentioned, customizing placement, turning placement in post on/off without hacking plugin directly…)
But I do love being able to customize which services to use, as well as tracking stats!

OK, not so seamless. I renamed the original plug-in, so it wouldn’t be replaced, and disabled it.
I activated the new plug-in, and it killed my sidebar.
So I may need some more hands-on here.
Back to the old one for the time being.
Peace,
Gene

I’m back to 1.4 for the time being. I understand how to place the widget on the page as I’d like (though I would like to be able to keep my default font and size - not sure how to do that…)
but for some reason, I’m getting a funky, offset border around the share-this window ad the close menu doesn’t show up.
Is anyone else haveing this kind of formatting problem? Could it be something in my css? I’m at a loss and I won’t have time to fool with it until Christmas vacation!

2) I’m also using v2.3 of wp. Any word on when st will be supported
Thanks

I noticed the ShareThis widget adds to the length of my pages after its been placed. Since I use an absolute layout the block elements overlap each other as a result. I’m assuming once we’re able to customize the font size and placement of the widget this won’t be an issue, so I’m looking forward to when such a feature will officially be supported.
I’m currently using the AddThis widget, but this one blows it out of the water.

This plugin has been driving me insane for the past half an hour. Tried to install it, and nothing appeared on the site, though I’d gone through the customization process and saved the resulting script in the Options>sharethis page.
Because I couldn’t get this to work, I’ve now gone back to 1.4, or at least tried to - I’ve uninstalled 2.0 but for some reason, activating 1.4 is killing the site.
Looks like there’s no sharethis for me.

Marco Luthe adds this Comment:
Hi Alex!
As your v2.0 plugin gives me some trouble (see the pingback before), I have now simply added the JavaScript script code provided by ShareThis.com.
This works fine if a single post is viewed. I believe that the URL from the address bar is used.
On the other hand, this does not work if you look at a page that is created by the main index template with more than one post.
The script lets the button appear, but it just points to the URL shown in the address bar (e.g. www.saphod.net), not to the post permalink.
I noticed that in your plugin, you add a JavaScript to The_Loop (SHARETHIS.add …) where you kind of define the title and the URL that should be used.
I tried to implement that, too, but it did not work - or better: I do not know how to implement it manually.
Could you please help me out? It would be so much nicer to have “ShareThis” on the main page as well, not just in single post views.
Thanks!
November 17th, 2007 at 2:25 pm
Marco Luthe adds this Comment:
OK, I solved the problem:
I put the Javascript code provided by ShareThis in the header - but only if the main page or a single post is viewed. This way, I can make sure it does not mess with Slickr again.
Then, within the loop, I just use the code snippet you provide in the plugin (SHARETHIS.addEntry).
Works fine!
