Wanted Browser Keyboard Shortcut: Focus to First Field

January 13, 2010

I’d love to have a keyboard shortcut that would set focus on the first visible field. Y’know, for web apps/sites that don’t set focus properly when the page loads.

My simple jQuery snippet works well for this – how easy would it be to turn that into Chrome and Firefox extensions?

Little project for someone?

    Use this:

and add some stuff to it. Then all you have to do is figure out how to attach a keystroke to a bookmarklet, which on Safari is Cmd-1 (e.g.)

Chromium and Firefox don’t have keyboard command for invoking bookmarklets in this manner so you got me going in an interesting direction here:

    1. Create a bookmarklet
    2. Add the bookmarklet to your Bookmarks menu
    3. Use System Preferences – Keyboard & Mouse – Keyboard Shortcuts to attach a keyboard shortcut to the bookmarklet

I tested this in Chromium (Mac).

Unfortunately, when I invoke the bookmarklet via the keyboard shortcut it opens a new tab before running the JavaScript.

A bookmarklet I need to click with the mouse doesn’t do me any good because I can just as well click the field.

So I’m back to thinking I need a browser extension for Chromium and Firefox.

It is certainly interesting for me to read this post. Thanks for it. I like such themes and anything that is connected to them. BTW, why don’t you change design :) .

It isn’t hard at all to start making money online in the undercover world of blackhat marketing. Don’t feel silly if you haven’t heard of it before. Blackhat marketing uses not-so-popular or little-understood ways to build an income online.
