“1st” Banks

Posted in: General

I don’t get why there are so many “1st” banks out there. What is the importance of being first? I’d love to see someone come out big as “2nd Bank”, with a slogan of:

Because no one gets everything right the first time.

Maybe the BankSimple folks can come up with some fun campaigns around this.

Chrome’s Incognito Mode

Posted in: Development, Technology

I’m finding that the Incognito windows in Google Chrome (I actually us Chromium) are becoming a daily tool in my standard browsing and development toolset. When I first heard about the concept of private browsing I had a more narrow view of it’s usefulness; but I’m finding lots of legitimate uses for it.

A few examples:

  • Testing the first-run/new user experience for a website/web app.
  • Testing website/web app logged in/out state handling.
  • Logging into a web app as multiple users at once.
  • Logging into Google Docs for different Google Apps domains (Google currently botches the auth pretty badly in many cases, otherwise forcing a cookie purge).
  • Opening a suspicious/spammy link (don’t want the site to be able to access cookies, etc.). Especially useful when used by right clicking and opening “in New Incognito Window”.
  • Checking where things rank on Google’s search index without your personalized results.

I used to use multiple browsers to handle these things, but with Incognito I don’t have to anymore. It’s more flexible, faster, and uses fewer system resources to use than running multiple browsers.

If you’re a web developer and you aren’t using Incognito mode as part of your standard development and testing process I highly recommend giving it a try.

How to Lock Exposure on the Canon S90/S95

Posted in: Photography

I’ve been using a Canon G10 as my everyday camera for the last few years. It’s a great camera, feels wonderful in your hand, lots of manual control – it’s like a mini-SLR. Unfortunately, it’s not a mini-enough SLR, so carrying it all the time is hard. This is the constant struggle with cameras, small enough to carry but with enough control to get the shots you want.

I’ve put my G10 on eBay and ordered the Canon S95 to replace it. I was originally planning to make the jump to the G12 (benefits: better low light performance and HD video), but the body size was still something I was struggling with.

The S90 really jumped out at me when it was released. I had an S30 about 10 years ago and was happy to see the S series return. The size is just right – big enough that you can treat it like a real camera, small enough that you can have it with you most of the time.

One of the guys at work has an S90 and I played with it a little. I really liked it, but couldn’t find the * button (Canon’s exposure lock button). That’s the thing I use more than anything on my SLR and G10 to try to quickly get the shot I want (without too much fiddling of settings, etc.).

On Friday, we figured out how to do it. The S90 (and S95) have a customizable button that can be assigned to one of a number of different functions, one of them is AE – auto exposure lock.

Auto Exposure Lock is a surprisingly useful tool that really expands what the photographer can do to apply exposure control, without losing the convenience and working speed of automatic exposure. In many cases, using it requires little more than identifying an element in a scene that you’d like to concentrate upon, aiming the camera at it and pressing the rear AE Lock button, and then re-composing to get the framing you want. It can lead to more consistent exposures when you’re shooting a sequence of shots, and is ideal for shooting with a primary subject off-center. It’s a great thing to get familiar with, so that you’re ready to use it when an opportunity presents itself.

This is what I’d been looking for when playing with the S90, but I hadn’t found it – nor had anyone else on the team. With this set as the custom button, I can treat an S90/S95 like a mini SLR (or the G series) when trying to compose a scene.

So there you have it – something you might have known already if you’d read the manual. My S95 is on order, so I still have an excuse.

Fall in Colorado

Posted in: General

Fall is my favorite season in Colorado. During the day it is sunny and warm – usually very pleasant for eating lunch outside. The heat of the day is different from summer, it’s less intense. In the evening, it cools off considerably – feeling more like evenings up in the mountains.

If you’re considering a visit to the Rockies, September-October is a great time of year.

New Permanent Author Rates on Envato Marketplaces!

It is beyond comprehension to me that people are happy about these rates. The developer only gets 25% of the sale? In order to get 50-70% of the sale you have to agree to only distribute the theme/plugin through Envato?

This is ridiculous. Some of these things are GPL, which means the end user has more distribution rights than the developer does. Maybe people just tweak something to create an :scare: exclusive :/scare: version to sell on the Envato sites.

In a standard business relationship a sales person gets 10-15% commission on a sale. People think that the 30% Apple charges in the app store is a bit high.

Vote for these SxSWi WordPress Panels

Posted in: Crowd Favorite, WordPress

It’s that time of year to promote your SxSW panels. I’m slated for two WordPress panels I’d like you to consider voting for.

  1. Beyond Blogging: WordPress is a CMS – much of the work that we do at Crowd Favorite is creating advanced CMS websites with WordPress. It’s what’s driven us to create the Carrington theme platform and Carrington Build.
  2. Making Money with WordPress (Without Working at Automattic) – I’ve really enjoyed talking shop with Shane and Peter as we’ve gotten to know each other over the last few years. Though our shops are very different we have similar experiences and challenges. We’re all trying to create great things, support the community and support ourselves and our teams at the same time.

Both of these have great groups of panelists/moderators and I think they’d be great events at SxSWi for WordPress developers, consultants and users.

Thanks for your consideration.

Interesting Registrar Scheme?

Posted in: Technology

I received an email recently from someone offering to sell me a domain that is a variation of my name. I own a lot of domains already, including a number of TLD variations of my name so I decided to pass on this one, but the offer was interesting.

I did a check and saw that the domain had actually been registered only a few days before it was offered to me.

The seller was asking for $600 for the domain, but basically volunteered that he’d accept any amount or would transfer the domain to me for free if I wanted it. He only asked that I create an account at [REDACTED] domain name registrar to transfer the domain to me.

The willingness of the seller to transfer the domain to me for free makes me wonder if this is actually a registrar’s ploy: buy domains that can be potentially sold to people that own domains with similar names, then try to sell or give them the domain to get them to sign up and hopefully renew the domain from that registrar to generate ongoing revenue.

It’s an interesting scheme. Or perhaps I’m reading too much into this…

UPDATE: I feel less like a conspiracy theorist after receiving this response to my rejection:

I’m not entitled to have that domain.
Please take a moment of your time for create an account on [REDACTED] so i can push your domain now.. ty

Cheaper MiFi Option

Posted in: Mobile, Technology

I don’t know why I didn’t think of this earlier, but instead of going month-to-month with a Verizon MiFi, I can simply set up a family plan and add my Palm Pre Plus as a second line (it has the free HotSpot feature). Total cost over my existing plan should be about $20/month. The MiFi account is $60/month; seems like a no-brainer.

It would also give me an easy way to get another subsidized device, like a BlackBerry Bold (that will support OS 6 with a real web browser). Or I could wait until January to see if I should use the subsidy on an iPhone and wait to see what BlackBerry models come out in the next generation.

I’ve been surprisingly happy for the last few months with a simple BlackBerry Curve for communications (phone, email, SMS) and PIM (calendar, contacts) operations. A low-res screen for reading email doesn’t matter much.

Still waiting for that perfect device…

Twitter Tools 2.4 (OAuth Support)

Posted in: Crowd Favorite, News, WordPress

Version 2.4 of my Twitter Tools plugin for WordPress is now available. Twitter Tools creates a full two-way integration between your WordPress site and Twitter. You can send your posts to Twitter, archive your tweets and create posts from them, and more.

This version has the following changes and is a must upgrade due to Twitter’s authentication changes:

  • OAuth integration. The user experience for this sucks. I even screwed it up once when trying to follow the set-up steps while testing. Sorry about this. This process is what Twitter supports for situations like this and though I have a plan for a better experience, we haven’t had time to build it yet. Hopefully we’ll have that available soon. Until then, avail yourself of the support and FAQs provided by my HelpCenter team.
  • Now relies on WordPress to provide JSON encode/decode functions (bumped the required version to WP 2.9).
  • WP 3.0 compatibility fix for hashtags plugin (set default hashtags properly).
  • WP 3.0 compatibility fix for creating duplicate post meta.
  • Added support form to settings page.

The download and links to other resources are now available on the Crowd Favorite website.

If you have any trouble with this, please contact the WordPress HelpCenter (303-395-1346) or you can try the WP Support Forums.

Enjoy!
