I haven’t played a Nicklaus Design course I haven’t liked, and The Bridges was no exception.

The layout was challenging but fair, with nice landing areas and danger lurking if you strayed too far from the intended path. The greens were superb, fast and hard but playable and extremely true. I had only 28 putts in my round, and not a single one bounced offline. There is water on 14 of the 18 holes, but it only really comes into play on 4 or 5 of the holes (#9 and #17 got me).

The range was in good shape and had well groomed target greens. The practice green next to the #1 tee was very consistent with the speed on the course. The clubhouse is comfortable and the snack shack has excellent food.

The carts were nice, but did not have GPS. The course book is quite good though, and I generally prefer using the course book and my rangefinder to GPS anyway.

The best part? Everything - including range balls, cart, sandwiches and chips - was included for about $60 each. The $75 on their web site would have been a bargain, for $60 I was shocked.

It was an immensely enjoyable round. We’ll definitely be back next time we’re on the Western Slope.

The course is generally in good shape, with fast and true greens. There is a little bit of water that comes into play on a few holes, but generally it’s not too tough to keep you ball in play off the tee.

Range balls and water bottles are included in the green fees, which are pretty steep. Each time I’ve played there, it’s been with a coupon of some sort. Normal green fees are $80+, which is more than I’d pay to play here.

If you can get a discount/deal - it’s a pretty fun track.

Vista Ridge Golf Club is a higher end public golf course north of Denver. I’ve played the course three times, and each time I’ve been impressed by the course conditions and the courteousness of the staff. This is a good combination.

The course plays long, you can hit driver on most of the par 4s and all but one of the par 5s. The greens are really hard, and it’s a good idea to land the ball just short or on the front of the green and let it release back to the pin. I find myself chipping with my hybrid from the fringe quite often on this course, as shots just trickle off the green.

The greens are fast and putt very true. Challenging, but rewarding of a good stroke. Unfortunately, if you hit it hard enough to keep it online through the hole and don’t sink the putt, you’ll probably have a good 3-5 feet coming back as the putt rolls out.

There isn’t a lot of water on the course, but the water that is there does come into play. There is a drivable par 4 over water that is always a fun decision.

I expect I’ll play here more than three times next summer.

It’s a bit of a drive from Denver to Grand Elk golf course in Granby, CO and we did it twice this summer. This is a beautiful golf course up in the mountains that is just starting to have housing built up around it.

The course isn’t a traditional mountain style course, it is much more of a links/target golf course. There are lots of wild grass areas and some forced carrys off the tee. If you’re off the fairway by 5-10 yards in places, it’s unlikely you’ll get to hit another shot with that ball.

The course was in great shape both times we played it. The greens are a little new, but are fast and putt well. They generally hold a full shot pretty well.

The only problem with the course is the mid-day thunderstorms and rain that roll in. We got chased off the course both times we played it, and it’s a long drive to have an hour delay and still only play 15-16 holes.

Maybe there are times of the year that this is less of a problem - I’ll definitely be checking the weather before I try to play there again.

It’s a fun track, one that I plan to play again in the future. A buddy of mine had coupons for the round we played, that seems like a good way to go if you can find them, though the normal rates aren’t terrible.

I forget exactly when we played the course, but I was surprised that they were hitting off mats at the range. I’m not sure if that is normal for their range or not.

I’d put this course in the “definitely play once” category, then you can decide if you like it or not. I imagine it will generate some mixed opinions.

It’s also been slow when I’ve played there on the weekend, and the staff in the pro shop has been less than friendly on several occasions.

It is, however, inexpensive and a very good challenge. I probably won’t play it too often - especially with Indian Tree right down the street.

Maybe if I start hitting the ball really straight I’ll give it another shot.

Riverdale Dunes is a Pete Dye course north of Denver. Like most Pete Dye courses, this is a links-style, “target golf” course. I’m not sure why, but I’m getting more and more comfortable with courses like this.

The course isn’t overly long, but it you miss the fairway in the wrong places you probably will have to drop another ball. There is water on a handful of holes, and when there is, it is intimidating - running alongside the tee shot landing areas and greens. There are also a few blind tee shots as the mounds around the fairways make it difficult to see exactly what is laid out before you.

The greens have been in great shape both times I’ve been there, but with an odd tendancy to be really fast on the downhill and really slow on the uphill. I stuggle with speed a little here, but they roll very true.

The clubhouse and practice areas are very nice here. There is a large putting green and a short game area (that I haven’t used yet).

The service is only so-so. On my first visit I left the pro shop and went to get my cart to load my clubs and go to the range. The starter was “out” of carts and told me to come back 10 minutes before my tee time. This wouldn’t be that big a deal, except:

He was somewhat rude about it

It is a several minute walk from the starter to the range

On my most recent trip, we grabbed lunch in the restaurant after the round. After sitting at a table for about 10 minutes waiting for a server, we gave up and went to the bar. The burgers we ordered took about 35 minutes to show up, and when they did, one had to be sent back (it was raw).

I’ll definitely come play here again, and I recommend it. But you’ll enjoy it more it you have a proper expectation regarding the service level.

The Heritage at Westmoor is a course I play fairly regularly; it is the sister course of Legacy Ridge. It is a well maintained track (even in the winter) that has a bit of a links feel to it.

The driving range is normally somewhat bare, but the short game practice area is probably the best in the area with two large practice greens and nice bunkers.

The Front Nine

The first hole runs downhill and requires a shot of just 200-215 yards as it will run down towards the creek that runs in front of the green. The first par three 4th is a very long one, downhill, with bunkers in the front - I’ll take a par every time here if I can.

The 5th hole is a dogleg left that is an awkward driving hole. You need to challenge the left side and cut the corner to shorten your approach shot, but too far left is in the junk.

The 8th hole is a tight driving hole with a slight dogleg right. The fairway slopes to the right and there is junk all along the right side. There is more junk and a hillside to the left, but a ball in the fairway here leaves a short iron approach.

The Back Nine

The 11th hole is a driveable par 4, depending on the wind. The fairway runs down and to the green on the left. Following that, the 12th and 13th are long. The 15th is a downhill par 5 with a nice high elevated tee - 350-370 yards is certainly do-able here.

There isn’t much water on the course. The par 3 7th is over water, but the actual green is quite a bit up from the water. The par 4 16th has a touch approach shot over water and the 18th has water all down the right side.

This is a fun, tough course.

I played Indian Tree for the first time today. I’d driven past it a number of times, and my impressions (looks hilly) were pretty accurate. It was also the first time in a while that I’d walked and carried my bag instead of riding or using my push cart.

The course was in good shape for being a muni and in the middle of winter here. We played from the tips and it was long. You can hit your driver on most of the holes, and there was only one par 3 that was under 200 yards.

I started off well, birdie-ing the first hole and playing even par through 6 - then the wheels came off. The greens were so hard and the grass so dead that chip shots didn’t hold well at all.

The range is on a bit of a tilt, which isn’t great - but I guess it’s better than nothing.

Twilight rate for 18, walking, plus a small bucket of balls: $24.

I’m looking forward playing the course again when it’s “greened up” a bit this summer.

UPDATE: I thought it played long in the winter when it was hard and fast - in the summer in lush conditions it is even longer. The 642 yard par 5 12th is a real beast.

I had an opportunity to play Glenmoor Country Club this summer and found it quite challenging. The course was designed by Pete Dye and has features you’ll find on many of the courses he’s designed.

To play well here, you have to hit the ball straight. You can be out of bounds or in the weeds quite easily just a few yards off the fairway. I also had some trouble chipping on the hard ground around the greens, but the greens themselves were in fantastic condition and I made more putts than normal. If you keep the ball in play, the course isn’t terribly long and you’ll have manageable approach shots.

One other note, make sure you tee off on hole #1 (across the street from the driving range), not on hole #10 (right next to the driving range) - the tee boxes are not numbered. Luckily for us, the course was not very busy at the time, so we didn’t hold anyone up with our little gaffe.

I think Legacy Ridge is one of the toughest public courses in the Denver West area.

The course is farily long (the par 3 16th is 220-240 from the blue tees) with some difficult landing areas. The par 5’s in particular are difficult driving holes. There is a first cut of rough (several inches long) on most holes that is about 10 feet wide before you get into the long hay. If you hit your ball through the first cut, you’ve got abou a 1 in 5 chance of finding it. I’ve played the course twice and lost three balls on each round. Big numbers are pretty easy to come by if you hit errant tee shots.

Many of the greens have severe undulations, making three putts quite possible if you don’t hit the correct part of the green. Pins were also tucked about 6-10 feet from the edges on most holes - not very friendly.

The greens were the only part of the course not in good shape, at least at this time of year. They had probably been punched and sanded a few weeks back and were quite ragged, bumpy and slow when I played. I assme this will get better later in the summer.

The weather was also a factor when I played here. Besides having to wait for lightning storms to pass over a few times, the wind also kicked up pretty strong from time to time. I recommend playing early to avoid as much of this as possible.

One more note, Legacy Ridge has the fastest golf carts I’ve ever used. No GPS or anything, but you can really cruise around on them.

I played 18 at Bear Dance this afternoon. This course had been highly recommended by the pro I take lessons from and I’d heard nothing but good things about it. Unfortunately, it’s an hour plus drive to get there, but I’d say that it is worth it every so often.

When we got there, the staff at the bag drop was friendly and helpful; as was the staff in the pro shop. The facility is fairly new and quite nice.

The driving range, chipping and putting greens were large enough to accomodate all of the players that were there. However, the driving range was so wet, I ended up wearing a good bit of it on my shorts, shirt and face. I hope it isn’t like that all the time.

The course was also wet so we had to keep the carts on path for all holes. This is always an annoyance, but there were some long treks between holes so carts were definitely in order. The marshalls and drink gals came by with enough frequency to be helpful, but not so much as to be annoying.

The course itself was in good shape, despite being a little damp. The greens had recently been punched and sanded, but rolled pretty true, if not as fast as they will later in the summer.

There are a few things about the layout of the course that really stand out:

It really feels like a mountain course with trees lining many of the holes and dramatic elevation gains and drops on different holes.

There are a lot of blind/uncomfortable shots on this course. A number of tee shots require you to aim over some trees to a fairway you can’t see, and there are a number of approach shots (particularly on the par 5’s) with similar characteristics. Granted, the blind approach shots are generally lessened if you hit the right side of the fairway at the right distance off the tee.

I played pretty well, shot an 83 and definitely left a few shots out on the course (I think I missed 4 putts from within 6 feet - I blame the punched greens). I tried to drive the bear claw hole (#6), but didn’t catch all of my drive and put it into one of the middle bunkers.

The 18th hole is a 600+ yard par 5. I had quite the experience here. We’d been waiting on the group ahead of us on almost every hole (and they in turn had been waiting on the group ahead of them).

On 18, we waited for nearly 10 minutes until the GPS in the cart said they were 350 yards out. I hit my drive down the fairway, it bounced, then glanced off one of their heads. Yikes! I didn’t even see this, I knew I’d hit it where I wanted to and was putting my club away. We didn’t even yell FORE because none of us thought they were still in range. The marshall came by and told me what happened as we drove down the fairway so I immediately drove up to apologize. The fellow was very understanding - appearantly it was just a glancing blow - phew! Oh, the drive was 380+ yards - I nuked that sucker (I wonder how much distance my victim’s head cost me ) then went on and over the green with a 4 iron, chipped back up and two putted for par.

Indian Peaks Golf Course is a short drive north from Denver in Lafeyette. The course was in fantastic shape, the best I’ve played since last summer.

The course has a mix of tough driving holes and some wide fairways. I didn’t spring for the $5 course book, but I wish I had. I put one ball in the water on 9 because I didn’t realize how far the water wrapped around the hole. The greens had been punched a week before, but were rolling pretty well.

This course uses a 1, 2, 3 pin position system instead of colored flags. On the scorecard, the sections of the greens are marked with a number and all flags are in the same numbered area. It didn’t matter much to me since I use my rangefinder for distances anyway.

A few holes were close to busy roads, but overall the round was relaxing and quiet.

There is a nice grass driving range, putting green and chipping area to warm up in. All looked to be in good condition. The range had nice target flags.

We went to grab lunch after our round and the lady running the bar/restaurant was not very polite or helpful. The burger was decent though.

I didn’t play particularly well, but I did enjoy the round and would go back.

I played Green Valley Ranch a couple weeks back. The weather made it quite an interesting day, it was nice and warm but extremely windy. The course is out towards the Denver airport so there is a bunch of open land and not much to break the wind. We had dust blowing in our face pretty badly dring the front nine.

The course itself was in decent shape. The carts have GPS in them, and it seemed to be accurate. Getting back to the wind, it was so bad that the roof blew clear off one of the carts in the group ahead of us.

There are a number of short par 4’s on this course. With the wind, I over-drove a ~320 yard hole with my driver and a ~305 yard hole with my three wood. If you go long on this course, you probably won’t find your ball - there isn’t much extra space.

The range facilities are decent, a small bucket of balls is $3-4 and there are nice undulating greens to practice putt on. A weekend round with cart and a small bucket cost about $65, which is more than I’d be willing to spend to play here again.

The Homestead at Fox Hollow is a fun par 65 course. It is set up like a links course with fescue and very long rough if you get too far astray, but it also has some wide fairways and some very short holes. I played from the blacks and hit a few 52 degree wedges for tee shots.

It’s only $30 to walk on the weekend, but it’s a pretty slow round. It took us 4 1/2 hours to finish 18 (starting at 10am). We may play there again, it’s a good course to score on.
