I played the Mountain Course in Incline Village this weekend. This is a tough short course (par 58 ) that winds its way though the woods with a number of narrow fairways with ball-eating brush luring on either side. For the most part, if you hit it straight, you’ll do ok. If you go left and right, you better bring a few extra sleeves of balls.

Mostly par threes with a lot of elevated tee boxes and elevated greens at this altitude make choosing a club pretty challenging. I was short on a number of holes and over a few of them… then the slippery greens made chipping the ball close a challenge.

All in all, a beautiful day on a beautiful course. I’m looking forward to playing it again in the spring.

There are two 18 hole courses. We played the Challenge Course and it certainly lived up to its name.

It is a desert-style course, often requiring you to carry the junk from the tee. There are snakes in the area, so be careful if you go into the desert after your ball. The greens were fast and tricky. Really tricky. All of them had subtle break, making even a 3 foot putt a bit more interesting than you’d like.

Don’t turn down an opportunity to play here.

This course doesn’t have the desert area you find at The Badlands, it is much more green and lush. The 18th hole is very nice, a dog-leg right with two shots that carry over water.

A nice course, but overpriced on the weekend in my opinion.

The course was in excellent condition, although the greens were a touch on the slow side. If you miss the fairway here, you’ll likely need a new ball or a rock club (and sometimes both).

The service was very good and we were able to get around as a twosome in about 4 hours.

I played the Callaway Divine Nine on Saturday afternoon. The Callaway Golf Center is a really nice facility, but the course and grass all over the facility was in really poor shape. I don’t know if they were getting ready to over-seed or what, but if you didn’t hit the green with your tee shot (all of the holes are par-3s), you were chipping through thatch crap with your ball half buried.

A very inexpensive and quick 9, but I wouldn’t recommend it under the conditions I played it in.
