  1. Grass Driving Range in Denver Area in Mid-November

I was pretty much assuming that all driving ranges in the Denver area would be hitting off mats by mid-November, but I called around and several are still hitting off grass. Hyland Hills = mats Indian Tree = mats Legacy Ridge = mats Heritage at Westmoor = grass Omni Interlocken = grass West Woods =…

  2. 36 Holes

I played 36 today, the first 18 (riding) at Colorado National and the second 18 (walking) at Coal Creek. It’s the first time this year I’ve played 36, and I’m quite sore. I also played 9 yesterday afternoon to try to get in a rhythm. On the good side, I’m playing some of the best…

  3. Spring Golf in Colorado

Yesterday it was 84 degrees in Denver. This morning is was still warm (in the 60′s, I think), but it looked a little ominous. The wind was kicking pretty good on the front nine, and by the time we hit the back it was cold and biting. A few raindrops turned into frozen rain and…

  4. First Birdie of 2011

Got out for my second 9 holes of 2011 on a beautiful day today. I’m working on getting my swing more upright again after getting way too flat and laying off the club last year. No idea if I’m actually making progress or not, but I hit a few nice shots. I got my first…

  5. It’s January, I Can’t Complain

Through a combination of work and family obligations, I’ve missed a good half dozen or more golf days this winter. Today I was able to go out and walk 9 on a beautiful sunny afternoon – the first golf I’ve played in a little over 3 months. I wasn’t expecting much, but managed to put…

  6. Jim’s Retirement

Congratulations to Jim on his retirement. I had a great time playing in his retirement golf tournament and I’m looking forward to losing to him consistently as he spends more time on the links next year. We played the tournament at Colorado National (formerly Vista Ridge) in a standard scramble format. There was a strong…

  7. Rust

A couple of weeks ago I played my first round of golf in 2008 duing a quick trip to La Quinta, CA. I managed to hit the range a few days prior during a break in the snow/cold, and my swing was in better shape than I could have reasonably expected. I shot a front…

  8. Swing Fixes

In the summer of 2005 and 2006 I really struggled with a hook off the tee1. Over the last year, I’ve reversed that and have been playing a straight ball or fade for most of this summer. I’ve made the change primarily with ball position – a little closer to me and further up in…

  9. Packing For a Golf Trip

My last golf trip was a 2 day weekend trip and I decided to just stuff my clothes into my soft travel case and forgo a suitcase entirely. That didn’t work out so well. My golf bag was over the 50lb limit and it was a bit unwieldy to move around. Next time, a separate…

  10. Finally, a Good Round

I played my first good round of 2007 this afternoon, shooting 81 (40-41) at Ute Creek. Very satisfying, especially after a couple of rounds in the 90s when I couldn’t find the world with my driver in AZ. It was a bummer to bogey a bunch of the par 5′s and find the water on…

  11. First 9 of 2007

I played my first 9 holes of 2007 this afternoon. All in all, I’m quite pleased with the results: 4 pars 4 bogeys 1 double bogey – I should have taken relief from casual water and didn’t, it cost me a penalty stroke when I splashed into a hazard. My chipping was solid on pitch…

  12. Two Months of Snow Later…

I got to go hit balls at the range (off mats) today as enough snow finally melted for my course to open up the range – my first real swings of 2007 and first since Thanksgiving last year. Hopefully the weather will hold this week and the course will open up again. I’ve got 2…

  13. Goals for 2007

My golf goals for 2007: Bring my average putts per round down to 30. Bring my handicap down to 7. My guess is that by meeting the first, I’ll also meet the second.

  14. 2006 Goal Reached

My goal for 2006 was to bring my handicap into single digits. Some great spring and early summer rounds brought it down to 8, but mid-season swing changes caused some inconsistency and it went back up to 11 in the fall. I thought I’d missed my mark, but a few good rounds (81, 80, 82)…

  15. “Lost” Putter

Just to mix things up a little I decided to use a different putter (an old 34″ TearDrop) yesterday instead of the 35″ Mizuno TP Mills Workshop IV putter I’ve used for the last 4 years. I left the Mizuno in the car, but it was gone when I got back. UPDATE: the Mizuno was…

  16. Back on Track

After playing the best golf of my life at the beginning of the summer, I completely lost it for about a month. My scores were getting back into the 90′s and it wasn’t much fun. My main problem was a hook I’d developed with my long irons and driver. I just couldn’t keep the ball…

  17. Playing it safe off the tee

I’ve discovered that no matter what club I hit off the tee, the difference between a good tee shot and a bad tee shot is simply a good swing or a bad swing. I can make a bad swing with a fairway wood, hybrid or iron just as easily as I can with my driver.

  18. Seventy Six

After breaking 80 for the first time with a 79 on Saturday, I managed a 76 on Sunday at Riverdale Dunes. I actually limped home with bogeys on 3 of the last 4 holes, and had a horrible putting day with 34 putts (could not read those greens at all). But I drove the green…

  19. Seventy Nine

I broke 80 for the first time today, shooting 79 at Legacy Ridge. I shot 39 on the front with a birdie and two penalty strokes, and a 40 on the back with a bogey on 18 after a bad drive and some tree trouble. I had only a single double-bogey on the round and…

  20. Goal for 2006

My goal for 2006 in golf – bring my handicap down to single digits. I didn’t play as much as I’d have liked in 2005, but hopefully I’ll find more time to swing the sticks in ’06.

  21. 40 for 9

I’m starting to shoot 40 or lower for 9 holes on a semi-regular basis now. My last three 9 hole rounds I’ve shot 38, 40, 39. The main issue I’ve got is still losing the driver way right at times when I don’t get my right shoulder through. The other problem I’ve been having is…

  22. Golf is a Funny Sport

Overheard at the pro shop while I was checking in for my round: I’m kind of scared to go out and play again, I played so well last time I played. I’ve felt that way before too – but only with golf, never with another sport.

  23. Winter Golf in Denver

It snowed on Sunday night, but it all melted in a few days and the golf course was open again yesterday. I talked to the pro I take lessons from and he said that’s how it will go all winter. Sounds good to me. It was so gorgeous today I had to hit a few…
