  1. 2006 in Review

Welcome to my second annual year in review post. January – Scott and I attend MacWorld and are madly trying to get FeedLounge ready for launch. I finish my digital photo frame and run into the first of what will be several hardware issues in ’06. February – Tasks Pro™ 1.6 and Tasks 2.7 are…

  2. Around the web

Mac Geekery – The Pain of a Password-Protected Screen Saver – I need to try this work-around. A Super iPod Christmas? – It was down for me in the morning (didn’t try in the afternoon). BBEdit Talk: Placeholders in Clippings – I should learn more about this at some point. Ajaxian – Ajax File uploads…

  3. Amazon Gift Certificate Nicety

If you get an Amazon gift certificate, you can choose to add it to your account immediately (like a credit), even if you aren’t buying anything. This seriously reduces the chance to lose it or forget to use it. 🙂

  4. My First “Saved by S3” Story

Somehow the creation of the Share This/Share Icon forums seems to have corrupted a table in the forum database. Luckily, I’m backing up my database archives to S3. Connect to S3 via JungleDisk on my laptop Grab the backup Verify the table is ok Restore the corrupted table That was much easier than trying to…

  5. Flickr “Big Upload” Tool?

I’m only aware of 3 Flickr upload tools for the Mac: Flickr Uploadr JUploadr 1001 I’m trying to upload ~18GB of photos. Flickr Uploadr will only accept single groups of files for upload, not folders of files. Same with 1001. This is a problem. JUploadr will accept folders, but keeps crashing. All of these apps…

  6. Share This for Other Platforms

I’m getting e-mails (and comments) from people asking where they can get a copy of Share This (my social web/e-mail plugin for WordPress) for: Moveable Type (and TypePad) Drupal Blogger LiveJournal Firefox Extension Safari Extension Greasemonkey scripts for inclusion in web-based apps like Bloglines, Google Reader, etc. Add more in the comments… I haven’t built…

  7. $1 Per Download, Again

Back in 2003, I postulated that micropayments might be a better monetization strategy for free/open source software than traditional donationware . In particular, I liked the idea of asking for $1 per download. I’m certainly not going to put up a paywall barrier to the stuff I make available here, but I thought it would…

  8. Share This Catching On

It looks like my Share This plugin is catching on with WordPress users. On Dec 12th, there weren’t any pages that showed up on a search for “powered by share this”1, now there are nearly 200,000240,000. That’s a pretty good initial adoption of Share This. I think it might be time for step 2. 🙂…

  9. Considering Flickr for Photo Backups

Since my hard drive issues, and the resulting nightmare with Reynolds Data Recovery1, I’ve done quite a bit to make sure I’ve got proper backup systems in place. My desktop machine is using a RAID 1 configuration, and is backed up nightly to an external drive using SuperDuper. The critical data on my web server…

  10. Around the web

WP-SmugMug – nice looking plugin from Adam. Robert Accettura: Thunderbird 2.0 Beta 1 Adam Tow: Yul Wins Survivor!, Eric Cheng: Survivor! LinkedIn Hits a Tipping Point: Annoying distraction turns essential business tool Ookles To Launch in Early 2007 – I was wondering what happened to Scott and Ookles. He went completely dark. Extending Your Application…

  11. Safari

Erik is challenging me to give Safari another chance, I’m going to take him up on it. I’m setting Safari as my default browser1 for the rest of the year, and I’ll try to keep some notes on the experience. I’ve actually never used Safari for long as my main browser before. [back]
