I got my HP 6110 hooked up to my wireless network via Rendezvous. The set up was a little complicated, but not too bad.
The DSL modem is still the wireless base station, I then connected a hub (uplink port) to the ethernet port on the DSL modem and connected the AirPort Extreme base station to the hub using the LAN port. I configured the AirPort to be a WDS remote base station.
I now have 2 named wireless networks in the house1. When I’m connected to the AirPort’s named network, I can print to the HP 6110 via rendezvous. When I’m connected to the DSL modem’s named network, I can’t see the printer.
- One from the DSL modem and one from the AirPort base station. [up]
How come you don’t insert the base station between the modem and hub and let the modem deal out the IP’s? That’s what I’m doing (well that, and I’ve got an Airport Express hooking into it, with an Xbox on its end), and all my devices talk with each other.
How would I insert the base station between the modem and the hub? Remember, my DSL modem is also a wireless router.
Ah, hehe. So the modem doesn’t have any actual wire going on?
Either way, they should be able to converse with each other using WDS I believe?
I’m not sure what you’re recommending that I’m not already doing. Here is the set-up:
Phone Jack => DSL Modem/Router (wireless) => Hub => AirPort & Desktop machine
The AirPort is connected to the internet via WDS.
Your wireless DSL modem doesn’t have a wired port on it?
Does your DSL modem distribute local IP’s? If it does why not turn off IP sharing in the airport station.
I go from a Cable modem, to a hard wired router(which branches to 4 network jacks) one line leads to the Airport station. I was able to print a test page from my powerbook which connects wirelessly, but that used that last of my ink. I haven’t tried connecting my windows machines yet, but there is no reason why they can’t work either as they can see the base station.
Yes, the DSL modem has a wired port, that is how it is connected to the Hub.
Yes, the DSL modem is the router and I turned that off on the AirPort.
