Subject: Clinical trial delayed. :(

Hi Everyone, After a long battle to get into the clinical trial, I finally got my first infusion on Dec 19th. The treatment cycle is a little different than originally planned. I will have an infusion once a week for 2 weeks, then take the 3rd week off. This is preferable to the twice-a-week infusion…

Casual iPhone Earbuds (w/ Mic)

The ear buds that Apple provides with the iPhone have always fallen out of my ears. I embarked on a journey of discovery recently and tested out a set of Panasonics and a set of Samsungs. Both work well and are under $15. I’m littering them in strategic places around the house and in my…

Achieving Zen With Auto Layout – The Book →

Also check out his follow-up post.

You can purchase Achieving Zen With Auto Layout today and get access to a PDF of the current state of the book, as well as a private GitHub repository where I am writing and storing all the sample code as I go. So far this has proven to be a wonderful way to write, because buyers of the book are able to provide direct feedback to me about the book so I can iron out any confusion or missing things I may not have thought of during my first draft.

I had a chance to talk with Justin about this approach the other day. I love it. I expect this type of interactive approach to creating technical books become more and more popular.

Subject: Hey, an update!

Hi Everyone, I’ve been doing well. I’m currently halfway through a week in Minnesota with Caitlin, Heather, Heather’s parents, and her brother’s family (our annual MN trip). I’ve done a little work travel as well, and have been getting out to the golf course regularly. We are planning to visit Seattle later in the month,…

Hypothesis: I could eat at a different Waffle House for every meal on this trip.

Not going to test it.

Perspective

I loved the bit in the the latest episode of the Accidental Tech Podcast where John Siracusa says: We judge ourselves by our motivations and others by their actions. This hit home to me. It’s very common for people to make less-than-generous assumptions of others when they have very little information about them. Once you…

Subject: Status update

Hi Everyone- Things are going well. On Feb. 14th we closed the deal to sell my business – the combined company is now going forward as “Crowd Favorite” and I have moved into the role of CTO (Chief Technical Officer). I wrote more about this here: On Selling Crowd Favorite So far, this has been…

Waterlogue

I’ve been seeing a lot of folks using Waterlogue recently. This is my first test image. Definitely fun to play around with, though it feels a bit like a fad/novelty. In other news, I’m successfully posting from my phone again.

Fixing Broken Social Twitter Avatars

Social Twitter Avatar Fix

If you’ve been using Social for a while like I have, you might also be seeing broken images in the comments area of your old posts. I did a little digging into this and discovered that this is related to how Twitter handles user avatars. When Twitter returns a user object, they include the URL…

Subject: Back on chemo

Hi Everyone– I’m writing from the infusion room at the hospital – I’m back on chemo. This is my 4th treatment since I’ve been back “on the horse”, such as it were. The 2 months I was off was great. I got my strength back, did some traveling (a golf trip and some conferences), but…

Ghost and Accidental Messaging

Ghost Copyright

I investigate pretty much every new publishing system that comes out. I’m eager to see what features they think are important, and see what might spark new ideas for my own site. I got my invite to try Ghost a short time ago. I put up a test post, and was a shocked by what…

Disagreeable

In Michael’s very kind link to our Rands in Repose retrospective, he mentioned the following: He dropped by for lunch at Apple during which we debated productivity software. I remember disagreeing with him about something fundamental and he held his ground, we agreed to disagree. During this lively disagreement, I decided that Alex was my…

Institutional Knowledge

Don’t underestimate the value of your team’s (collective) experience. When new folks come on board you can tell them how you do things and why you do things certain ways. You can share historical anecdotes about the reasons things are done these ways, but there is no way for those new hires to actually have…

Your Team is Your Product

I read with interest the path that Peter took in learning about a SAAS business vs. his consulting business. Having experience in both types of businesses there wasn’t too much that was unexpected for me here, but reading a well thought out exploration of a situation is often results in clarifying ideas for me. In…
