RAM Install, Take 3

After the RAM failed the first two times I tried to get it all installed, I wasn’t too optimistic when I received my second set of RMA’d DIMMs today. So far, things seem to be working ok with the additional RAM.

My saga went something like this:

  • Order and receive 4GB (4 x 1GB DIMM) of RAM
  • Computer won’t boot up after installation
  • Remove 2GB, everything works
  • RMA 2GB and receive replacement 2GB
  • Replacement 2GB doesn’t work either
  • RMA 2GB (again) and receive replacement 2GB (again)
  • Finally got all 4GB in there and working

Adam’s saga went something like this:

  • Order and receive 4GB (4 x 1GB DIMM) of RAM
  • Computer acts funny after installation
  • RMA 4GB and receive replacement 4GB
  • Finally got all 4GB in there and working

We both ordered our RAM from OWC, whose tech support rep claimed that they hadn’t had any reports of the RAM for the Quad having issues.

A few fun stats:

  • We both had to go through 8 DIMMs to get 4 working DIMMs
  • 3 out of 5 RAM shipments had to be (at least partially) returned for replacement

I don’t know if I’d spend the extra $90 and order the RAM from Crucial next time or not (it was an extra $250 when I originally placed the order for the RAM – hence my order from OWC). I do know that it’s been a major annoyance and time sink getting the simple RAM upgrade done.
