I tried to take photos of the fireworks tonight – interesting challenge. I had my best results using the Canon 28-135 IS lens (Image Stabilizer off) at 135mm. The exposure was set for 2 seconds, f 6.7 using manual focus, mirror lock-up, a tripod and remote shutter release. I took about 100 photos, 50 or so are somewhat decent and there are a handful that look promising. Here are a few samples:

Oh wow those are nice.
Thanks Matt.
I tried taking pictures last night with my Canon Powershot A10 digital camera. Needless to say I didn’t get anywhere near the results you did, shutter response just isn’t there on my camera and the manual shot features are lacking. Nice pictures!
Smykes, I think the timing is the most important factor with fireworks – tough to do with the shutter lag of most point and shoot cameras. I’ve found that the ‘Sports’ mode of the Canon S30 gives somewhat better shutter response than the other modes – although it could just be my imagination.
Much better than mine!
*Very* nice.
Definitely better than my first attempt with digital the other night.
(And my little Nikon 4300 sure looked silly on top of my ~35 lb. Gitzo I bought ~1980. But it worked. 😉
