Anyone know of a Windows laptop that has DVI out? I’d love to be able to run whatever laptop I buy through my desktop monitor (like I do with my PowerBook). Heck, I’d like set up a KVM switch and share the whole set up between both machines. 😎
I’m not planning to buy one for a little while, but the current front-runners are the Sony Vaio Z1 and the Sager 17″ models. Obviously the big screen, numeric keypad and the fact I can choose a fast HD are good selling points for the Sager. I like the Sony too; it has a really nice keyboard and screen and is smaller and lighter. Problem is, neither have DVI out.
Hopefully something better will be mentioned here or will be out soon.
can’t they all use an adaptor? sorry if that is stupid but my sony pcg-u1 has pretty much the same adaptor as the powerbook thresher (12″) … i’m using a sony 17″ lcd though … are there no such adaptors?
The picture doesn’t look very good going from analog to digital. I’d prefer one with digital output rather than having to convert analog out to DVI.
Your 17″ may have analog in, in which case it wouldn’t matter for you – many do.
Now I’m not sure how an S-Video to DVI converter would work.
the only ways i know of right now to get dvi output:
1. margi pcmcia card with dvi output
2. dell “d” series latitude (d600, d800, etc.) notebooks with port replicator. dvi is on port replicator, but not on the laptop itself.
3. some thinkpads also have dvi on the port replicator
I cannot understand why computer makers are so slow adopting DVI output as standard on notebooks!
Apple did it immediatly!
They do not seem to understand that many people would like a small notebook to carry around, but would also like to connect it to a big external LCD display with digital quality…
Consider it would come almost for free!!!
Let me know if you find such a strange thing.
Thanks.
I completely agree!
it is incomprehensible why the PC makers do not have a DVI output.
we need to start a email campaign to Dell or something.

Good luck in your search for a PC laptop with DVI. I struggled with the same issue and decided to try a Margi cardbus DVI adapter (the “Display to Go” model.)
Pros: It gets the job done up to 1600×1024. It works with Apple Cinema Displays up to 22″ (with an ADC to DVI converter.)
Cons: You can’t play video, plus window movements (dragging etc.) are slower than with a normal AGP card, Photoshop zooming etc. are also a little slow.
I wouldn’t recommend the Margi card unless it is only for ocassional use.
Have you decided on either the Sony or the Sager yet?
PS Similar to the Dell mentioned above, Toshiba makes a Tecra with DVI in the docking port. Personally this Sager looks NICE but I wonder if the quality in the Sony league? http://www.sagernote[...]uctType=8790
I may take a chance on the Sager when I need to take the plunge.
The dell inspiron xps laptop has on-board dvi out. Starts around $2300. Now only if it had a 17″ lcd…
Whoops. forgot about the Dell Inspiron 9100 – also has DVI out and starts at $1300
MTECH870P X-Treme
17″ WXGA Widescreen
here is the laptop you need. Good Luck
Not bad! Looks like about $2500 fully loaded. Thanks for the tip.
Sager’s top-of-the-line notebook now has built-in DVI :).
Ooh, that looks very nice! Hopefully the price will dip a touch before I need to buy it.
Acer Travelmate 6000 and 8000 series also have DVI output :
Windows Laptop Time
I finally need to purchase a Windows machine for a project and I still have the same questions I had a year ago. I’m also trying to decide between a 12-13″ model or a 17″ model, which makes comparisons difficult.
Since I have the big PowerB…
The new Acer Travelmate 8100 series have a dvi output on the laptop’s rear side…
I own a Travelmate 800 and I am absolutely happy with it, I believe the new features of 8100 make it a killer laptop (pciXpress, 533Mhz bus, new Pentium M with 2MB cache, 15.4 WSXGA+ display to name a few…)
Oh, I forgot to mention that they didn’t skip the D-15 analog output 🙂
I wonder if you can go triple-head…
Do these laptops that have DVI out also have the option to treat that attached monitor as a second monitor, or do they treat the attached monitor merely as a replacement for the laptop’s own monitor?
It depends on the model – if you read the future posts linked here in the comments you’ll see the Sony just does mirroring.
Just got an Acer 4651LCi for £700 (GBP) which has DVI. (There’s also a 4651LMi with GeForceGo 6600 and DVI). Have plugged it in to a Dell 2005FPW 20″ widescreen TFT – works beautifully. Dual display, a new computer and 20″ wide LCD for about £1100 – my dreams are coming true…
I have a Sony S360 which has a DVI ouput on the port replicator – works great with my desktop monitor (Dell 2001FB 1600×1200).
er, the correct monitor is Dell 2001FP
Check out http://www.villagetr[...]/review.html. The card sells for $250. It’s supposed to be really good – can support up at 23 in HD display though the DVI out port.
Unfortunately the Acer models with DVI only support DVI-D which is digital only. DVI-I means it carries the analogue signal too so you can use a 50p converter and plug your standard VGA monitor into the port!
From what I saw with the acer’s however is that they also have VGA plug on them too on the side
I have a Prostar. A sister company to Sager. My Prostar has not been road worthy. I have had 2 mother boards replaced, a hard drive, and a wireless net card. Even though they have some forward thinking technology they still lack the speed they should.
Does anyone know of a dual link DVI on a laptop that runs windows? The only option I can think of is the MacBook Pro.
Same question: Are there any DUAL-LINK DVI laptops besides the MacBook Pro?
Some high end Acer Laptops provide dual-link dvi for driving high resolution displays, such as the apple cinema 30″ inch display. Generaly every laptop with the the new ATI mobile card (I think everything above x1600) should do the job
Still now in 2007 I have a hard time finding dvi out. Crazy!
Looks like on the very high end Dell Precision M6300 comes equipped with DVI out. The entry point for that series is around $2000.00.
At those prices, you might as well buy a Mac…
