I’m now using the new build of Camino that includes the new tab controls. I have to admit, they look darn good and add a nice bit of polish to the app. My only gripe is the Close icon on the left instead of the right. The

look is a bit cramped in my opinion. I hope someone will come up with a patch to put the close icon back on the right side of the tab.
If you haven’t tried Camino lately, you should give the current nightly build a try.
Camino is an OS X browser, shouldn’t the close tab button be on the left?
There is a difference between closing tabs and closing windows.
I think the new tabs are an improvment but they still feel a little too cramped vertically. Putting the close button over on the right would be nice but what I’d really like are some tabs like they have in Shiira. That is a very nice implementation that even allows drag reordering. I’m really looking forward to the next stable release of Shiira. I guess we’re pretty lucky on the Mac to have so many browser choices.
I like the new tabs and would like to give Camino another stab at being my default browser. I keep switching between Safari, Omniweb, and Camino.
Sadly, Camino doesn’t seem to like loading my bookmark groups that have a lot of tabs (it just ignores the sites that would cause the tabs to not fit in the row).
Kevin: I haven’t tried Shiira because my biggest gripe w/ Safari is Web Kit and associated bugs.
Brandon: Have you filed a bug?
Hi Alex, I only do a little web development so I’m not really up on Web Kit’s bugs but Shiira is pretty good. It’s got a ways to go to really compete but I do feel that they have out done the others in regards to tab implementations. I don’t store bookmarks in my browser so I don’t know how it fares there.
The problems as I see them…
Safari – consumes a lot of memory over time and really slows to a crawl on my iBook 500 Mhz
Shiira – uses a drawer for downloads and bookmark management
OmniWeb – currently playing with it so undecided but there seems to be a lot of fuss about the out dated version of Web Kit being used
Camino – hard to put a finger on this but it seems to not quite have that polish yet
FireFox – very nice but decidedly unMac-like
I tend to bounce back and forth between all of them though.
A drawer for downloads is definitely a good way to go. I hate those little download windows with a passion.
I probably wouldn’t mind drawers so much if I had a bigger screen. They just feel too cramped on my poor little iBook. This is one area where I would prefer a choice.
If you get the 12″ screen, you’re just asking for suffering and misery. 😉
no, i haven’t submitted a bug report yet… it looks a bit too complicated to do at the moment, but i’ll look into it later. if you feel like reporting it for me… go ahead =P
Shiira is Rocking
I’ve been using Shiira as my main web browser for a month or so now and I have to say that I’m quite happy with it. It’s a very solid showing for a beta level application. By the time it reaches 1.0 it should be pretty impressive. The tab implementa…
The side of the tab for the close button is irrelevant to me–what I’d like to know is how to get rid of it altogether. What a waste of space, when closing with the keyboard or a mouse button is so much faster. Anyone know if the close button on the tabs can be disabled? No luck with all my searching so far.
