In the last two weeks or so, I’ve started hearing from more and more people who are running PHP 5. I even heard from some people whose ISP has upgraded to PHP 5. I’m amazed and baffled that ISP are doing this already.
I had planned to wait until after the next release to add support for PHP 5 to Tasks Pro™ and Tasks, but I don’t think I can do that.
So now I’ve installed PHP 5 and I’m using it as I add features for the next version as a test. I think I’ve got just about everything working properly too. This is good news.
Hopefully by the time I have the next release in beta, I’ll be confident in saying that Tasks Pro™ and Tasks will run on PHP 5.

Funny coincidence, I blogged about the state of PHP5 today. I’m setting up the new hosting-platform for an ISP, and with all the benefits to the object oriented programmer, PHP5 would be really nice to have on the system. Luckily you’re dealing with an admin that tries things out first, so my users will be stuck with PHP4 until I can reach another conclusion. As for Tasks, I’m glad you’ve reconcidered. You don’t need to use the features of PHP5 if you like to keep it interoperable with PHP4, just make sure it’s interoperable with PHP5 as well. 🙂 But I would love input on the usage of PHP5. What applications DO work with PHp5? Is there a momentum growing that will “force” people to make their php-based products interoperate with PHP5? Leave me a comment, please 🙂
Most developers have long lists of features they want to add to their software. They don’t want to spend time going through something that already worked to make it work on something new that was *supposed* to work with their code.
I’d expect the next release of most of these software packages will support PHP 5. The thing that will force commercial products to support PHP 5 is customer pressure.
I know that I won’t feel comfortable using PHP 5 specific features in my software for probably a year or two.
Any luck running WP? We’ve been getting a lot of reports about wp-login.php killing the server under PHP5.
Haven’t tried yet… you try using the OS X PHP builds from entropy.ch yet?
Nope, I know so little about the Mac so far I’m always worried about messing it up, so I haven’t changed much of the default web stuff.
