I used the Finder today for the first time in a while and came up with a short list of things I’ve become dependent on in PathFinder:
- Sorting by type – I know it isn’t the
, but sorting folders to the top in the column view makes it faster for me to dive into sub-folders.

- The drop stack rocks. I am constantly stacking up files to move later. Love it.
- The embedded terminal window set at the current location is great for quick commands.
I know they are working on the next release, I look forward to seeing the progress.
I know this must be the most, flat out, stupidest (great word) excuse for ‘not’ buying a Mac right now. But I am waiting for Tiger before buying my next… I hate buying one now, only to have to pay for an upgrade one, two or three months from now…
I am so looking forward to Tiger…
I registered Path Finder recently. Truthfully I don’t use it an awful lot, but I do find it useful for managing large amounts of files.
For example I have a folder in my home directory called ‘from my windows boxen’. It’s the unsorted files I copied to my Powerbook from my old Windows XP system. Since there is alot of stuff in there, Path Finder is great for shuffling things about. The drop stack is a genius idea.
It’s also great for web development.
Here’s hoping Path Finder 4 supports tabbing. That would make it perfect in my eyes.
Tabbed PathFinder would definitely be cool.
I thought I’d mention that the drop stack is an old NeXTSTEP idea, that’s actually how the dock worked… I don’t know how on earth it didn’t get moved over to OS X, but I’m glad someone is using the concept.
hmmm… seems it’s been a while since I’ve used NeXTSTEP, lol. The shelf was built into it’s file browser, much like it is in Path Finder. The dock was fairly similar to today’s OS X dock, and did not as far as I can remember act like a shelf. But, long story short, the drop stack idea came from NeXTSTEP.
