acutally, i disagree. livejournal being opensource doesn’t mean that any of the myriad clones actually challenge their popularity. it does mean, though, that should sixapart ever drastically change the community, or go out of business, or start charging, any of the clones can pick up and provide the same service.
preventing vendor lock in isn’t an issue when your vendor is doing what you want at the price you can afford. it’s about having an exit strategy when that relationship changes.
