I’ve released a beta version of Popularity Contest – my WordPress plugin that helps you find out which of your posts are most popular. This version should be WordPress 2.3 compatible1, but I need help testing it.
Popularity Contest was already largely compatible with WordPress 2.3, but the category reports on the reports page did not work properly.
The download and more information are available on my WordPress Plugins page.
If you have any trouble with this, please leave a comment.

Hi alex – I got received the same type of error running wp 2.3 with this beta that I did with the pre-2.3 version of your plugin: after submitting a new comment the white error page comes with:
Warning: mysql_query() [function.mysql-query]: Can’t connect to local MySQL server through socket ‘/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock’ (2) in …/catsandbeer/wp-content/plugins/popularity-contest-1.3b1/popularity-contest.php on line 546
Warning: mysql_query() [function.mysql-query]: A link to the server could not be established in …/catsandbeer/wp-content/plugins/popularity-contest-1.3b1/popularity-contest.php on line 546
Can’t connect to local MySQL server through socket ‘/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock’ (2) on line: 546
the comment IS correctly stored/posted, but the behavior clearly isn’t acceptable on a live site (I pruned out the full path on my web host – it is correctly listed/reported in the error message)
Hi,
I have the same behaviour as Brian. Can the problem be related to the fact that my mysql server is on another machine than the web server?
Thanks,
Antonio

Hi Alex
I’m using Popularity Contest to display the 10 most popular post in my blog and I wonder if it would be possible to include a function to display the 10 LESS popular post. It is just an strategy to keep old post alive.
Btw, I use Google XML Sitemaps and Popularity Contest, will PContest final compatible with sitemaps? 🙁
Greetings!
1.3b1 worked great on my installed, and corrected all backend display issues I was previously experiencing.
Thank you!
Hi Alex! Appears this error when someone post a comment:
Warning: mysql_query() [function.mysql-query]: Access denied for user: ‘root@localhost’ (Using password: NO) in /home/blogprimate/www/blog.primate.es/wp-content/plugins/popularity-contest.php on line 546

Access denied for user: ‘root@localhost’ (Using password: NO) on line: 546
Note: the comment is record anyway.
Thanks and congratulations for you fantastic work!
I’ve seen the same behavior as @roam on WP 2.3. I can enable Pop. Contest 1.3b1 OR Google Sitemaps 3.0 and comments work, but if I enable both I get a MySQL error about trying to connect. The comment is posted, but an error is shown and no email is sent.
Any idea if there is a workaround?
Hi Alex,
I’ve opened a Trac ticket for the problem with the Google Sitemaps plugin. That fix should solve this issue…

I have 2 days to the search for this plugin
Thank you .. Have added your blog via RSS subscription.
Everything working well for me, thanks !
Cool. This works for my customer’s blog..
Thanks Alex.
Nice pugin, i search it 🙂 Thanks Alex!
Great plugin. Thanks for sharing.
thank you for nice plugin .
Man this is a good plugin Ive been looking for something like this. Ive always judged how popular my articles were based on how the search engines like them but now I can figure out which of my readers prefer which blog submissions. Great post!
this is nice project.
This plugin is a real gem. I used to use google analytics to judge how popular my articles where, but this does it all for you. Kudos to the creator 😉
I just got my hands on this and it is really good. Wish there was a plugin or module for Joomla 1.5.x that did the same thing. Kuddos.
I use the plugin on many of my blogs. I just wanted to say thanks. I also wish there was on for Joomla 1.5
I want to add this plugin. But will it work with the newer versions of WP Themes? Like 2.8? Thanks.
Joomla has this standard built in, switch to Joomla, way better then suffer with WP… I guess this is a facist blog for slow WP-ers…
Hi all, the plugin looks good. Would anyone be able to note some advantages of this tool over the “stats for wordpress” plugin?
