I got an Android Dev Phone so that we can test on it and build for it. My hope/thought was that I could use the SIM card from my iPhone as needed for testing, and use it as a WiFi device most of the time. After some initial hiccups, that does seem to be the case.
I had to add an APN as outlined here, then I was able to connect a Google account and get the phone working and set up WiFi. After that, I powered it down, removed the SIM and powered the phone back on. It shows a “No SIM Card” message, but everything – including WiFi access – still seems to work without the SIM card (now that the phone has been activated).

Thank you for this Android info. I was looking for info on whether it would work for app dev. in this way or not. Is this still working?
I hope this is not considered off-topic but this issue applies to the iPhone as well and so really goes together, I think.
Some time back you posted about using an iPhone off-contract 2007/07/02.
I did not see anything posted since about whether or not your iPhone continued to work with iTunes and for OS updates etc.
My purpose is to use the phone to test/try apps and for music. I would like to learn how to write apps but for my app ideas I need the functionality of the iPhone which the simulator and touch do not provide.
Meanwhile, the cost of a monthly iPhone contract is insane. I have wifi at home and would like to be able to use an off-contract iPhone that way instead. Also it probably is wise to test on a few models of iPhones to be certain all is well.
I am not sure what happens once the iPhone(s), Mac and so on are keychained by Apple’s dev program, especially if something like jailbreaking or whatever has been done to the phone or there is no contract. I noticed also that the Apple iTunes store asks for the phone number.
I wish there was an article that spells out all of this so I could just get on with it… I don’t want trouble, I just need to work.
I looked at this program when trying to find a solution which may be useful, or not… http://code.google.c[...]telekinesis/
I came across that program in a search after reading that Unity3D has a way to preview code; they say with” iPhone Remote, use an actual iPhone or iPod Touch to view and test your game live, right inside the Unity Editor”.
I wonder if a tapp could be made for telekinesis so web apps could be tested on the iPhone or perhaps that is not even needed if all I need to do is buy an off-contract iPhone and then buy a sim that fits.
I and many others interested in learning how to program apps for the mobile market without a huge overhead would appreciate any advice about these issues. Thank you.
