For a year or so I’ve had an iPhone and BlackBerry on AT&T. After this weekend, I’m hoping to be completely free from AT&T.
I’m going to jailbreak and move my iPhone to T-Mobile, piggybacking on a friend’s plan as I don’t use any minutes on it. I’m going to move my BlackBerry account to either Sprint or Verizon and get the BlackBerry Tour. Sprint has better pricing ($70/month with unlimited SMS) and customer service but Verizon supposedly has better coverage and network speed ($75/month with 250 SMS).
Either way, leaving AT&T will be a big win. The more iPhones and connected devices that get added to AT&T’s network, the closer it seems be to collapsing.
I’ve been playing with a Pre on Sprint for the last two weeks and it’s going back to Best Buy tomorrow. The device is sound, but the software is pretty laggy for my tastes. The iPhone 3G S kind of spoils you for fluidity. That said, I’m also going to swing by the T-Mo store tomorrow and snag a service plan to try them out for a while. My iPhone got the unlock/jailbreak this evening, so it’s all ready for it’s new overlord.
AT&T’s the pits down here in P-town, and we don’t have 3G down here anyway, so the only thing I’ll lose is Visual Voicemail (which sucks, but I’ll manage). Bonus is GV Mobile (Google Voice) is in Cydia, so there’s a nice interface to my GV account.
Agreed on the Pre – it’s interesting and shows promise, but it’s definitely still a 1.0 product.
