After looking at this and doing quite a bit of reading, I decided to get the Epson 960 printer as a stopgap until I upgrade my camera to a Canon D-90 (or whatever is 6+ megapixels with a full-size sensor) in a year or three. At that time, I am sure there will be something better and cheaper than the current lead horse in the printer race, the Epson 2200. I chose the 960 over the Canon S900 and S9000 because of print quality and supposed longevity of prints. Canon has a decided edge in printing speed, but I don’t mind waiting for a print to finish, I want it to look good.

I’ve done a couple of 8×10 prints so far and I’m very pleased at the results. You have to push the ink cartridges in hard, initially I didn’t put them all the way in. Also, I did have to make a little shim out of a small roll of paper (about 1/8″ thick) for moving the print heads up so that they don’t hit the end of the page on an 8×10 as described here. This kind of tinkering I don’t mind since I knew about it in advance – it really shouldn’t be necessary though.
