My Treo 600 is getting a bit long in the tooth, however reports from friends that have the Treo 650 suggest that waiting for the next Treo might be a good idea. Eric just got a Blackberry and he seems initially excited about it. Are there any other great PDA/phones1 out there I should be thinking about?
I’ve also downloaded the current version of ChatterEmail to see how it’s coming along. The psuedo-push e-mail is kind of cool in theory, but I get so much e-mail it’s actually kind of annoying in practice.
- Must have a keyboard and sync w/ a Mac – 3rd party sync conduit is ok. [back]
Maybe it is time for you to go with a PocketPC device?
Such as?
I would suggest a 650, I love mine even with the few bugs. If you have Cingular you can hack it to get all the unlocked phone benifits to fix a few of those quirks.
I don’t know why they said wait for the new treo since it isn’t close to finishing. I say this because last time the 650 was about to release there were tons of rumors months before. Another big issue is PalmSource has recently stopped dthe development of there next OS and moved all their resources to a Linux OS. So I don’t see the benifit in waiting, unless you want a Linux smartphone with a Palm OS. Although there are many rumors that the next Treo will run Windows mobile. Which would be very cool, but I don’t know if it will help us Mac users. I guess that depends on Missing Sync.
I follow the news for smart phones a lot, since it is my job, and I still don’t know why they said wait. But, if you dont go with a treo, and aren’t waiting, do not go with anything HP.
Alex, I’m not sure who your service provider is. That might help with suggestions.
I’m on Sprint. From everything I’ve seen the Treo 600 is a lot more stable than the 650 – the phone crashing isn’t acceptable to me.
the new motorola “razerberry” thats coming out soon looks real cool. I’m going to have a hard time resisting 😀
I’ve seen some reader reports (such as on Amazon) which claim that the crashing problems on the Treo 650 go away after running and installing the latest driver upgrades. No idea if this is true or not?
My understanding about Palm OS 6/Cobolt is that nobody is willing to be the first to design hardware for it (it will need new hardware), even though its been ready for a while. Basically, the market has already been won by the Pocket PC and so nobody wants to try pushing a new OS. I have no idea which Pocket PC devices might be OK.
My friend got the cheap Blackberry phone offered by T-mobile (I forget which one, but it was much cheaper than the Treo) and is very happy with it – but mostly because of e-mail and web browsing, both of which work pretty well if you pay for the unlimited data plan from T-mobile.
Personally, there are some apps I use which are only Palm OS right now, so I would go with a Treo, but if I didn’t need these apps and portable e-mail was my biggest priority I’d get a Blackberry.
I love my Blackberry 7250.
I’ve just tested and reviewed the new HP iPAQ hw6515 Mobile Messenger. Device with keyboard, phone and GPS. A very nice device, with only push email missing, but MS is planning to make this possible with Windows Mobile 5.0 this autumn.
I have gone through a bunch of phones. I went from Sprint to T-Mobile. I started with the Treo 600 then switched over to the BlackBerry 7100t. It was nice to have the BT and it was a great phone but now I am back to the Treo 600. There aren’t enough apps that I use available for the BlackBerry. I am thinking about the GSM Treo 650 just because I love the BT, sweet keyboard and the Hi-Res Screen plus I can still run all the apps I love. I think what I will do is just wait for the next gen of phones. I can’t justify the 650 for the price but it is very nice. The lastest firmware update fixes alot of issues.
I just upgraded the firmware on my Treo 650 and I haven’t had the crashes like I did before. There are a couple things that are going on but I think they are solely because of the applications I am running and not the phone.
I still recommend a treo and maybe even shell out $7 a month for an exchange server through 1and1 or someone else. I love exchange and if I found a good Win mob phone I would definitely change, but I haven’t seen a better phone then a treo 650.
Dead Treo 600, Again
My Treo 600 went from 100% battery around noon to completely dead around 7:30pm. I’m not exactly sure what caused the battery drain this time1, but I sure am tired of losing all my data every time this happens. Perhaps it is time to upgrade to the 650…
