File Browser

Posted in: Photos

Stayed up kinda late last night (after getting home from work late) finishing the :scare: file browser :/scare: for photos. I’m pretty pleased with it. I think it will make it much more clear how you add files/folders to the app. The file upload control was very misleading and people rightly expected to be able to upload when they saw it - which of course, you couldn’t.

Another change this has brought is the consolidation of the ‘Add Photo’ and ‘Add Folder’ buttons into a single ‘Add Photos’ button. You can select individual photos or folders you want to add from the same screen. I think this is an improvement.

I’m considering jumping the version number all the way to 4.0 for this release. There have been a lot of big changes and improvements in this release. Probably more than should be in a "point release".

I haven’t finished testing 3.5b3 yet ;-) Here I am, you new 4.0 beta tester! Where can I download from?

P.S. What about categories/galleries in Portfolio view? It should not be so difficult. I guess Portfolio containing dazillions of pictures is a little clumsy. I’d like to search my photos and besides show my friends my Dawns, Sunsets, Portraits, White flowers, Red flowers, Blue flowers, red thorns :-)

Well, you can go to the search page, choose thumbnail view for your search results, check the Portfolio checkbox, add your search criteria and filter your Portfolio that way. I plan to add support for groups/albums in a future release.

Would an album/group system really be any different from additional keywords? Maybe a different display method, but have it map to keywords “under the covers”? I’m just looking for similar functionality without additional coding :-)
Maybe I’m not making sense, but with keyword based grouping, you get the searching and virtual folders you have now… pictures in multiple albums, etc. Want to make sure that all gets carried forward.

Looks like a neat project/product. Is your “version 4″ available anywhere yet? I have fits trying to upload and maybe that fixes it.

    Thanks,
    Bruce

When I add albums/groups I also need to add a whole bunch of additional stuff to let you manage the albums/groups and how they interact with the photos. It is a pretty healthy bit of code and as such will be done in a subsequent version.

I plan to have 4.0b1 available pretty soon here. There still won’t be any upload functionality, the photos need to be added to the server via FTP or one of the many web based psuedo FTP clients that are available (assuming you are running on a remote server, obviously this isn’t a problem if you are running locally). I’ll add a link to one of the PHP ftp clients in the FAQ.
