UPS Recommendations?

Posted in: Technology

Our power has gone out 3 times today. The first two were blips, the last one lasted over an hour.

I’ve got good surge protectors and do my main work on my laptop (so I have a battery backup already), but I’d like to get a UPS as I plan to bring my desktop machine back online soon as a server/live backup system. Nothing fancy, nothing overkill, but something that can safely shut down a Mac would be nice.

Anyone have recommendations?

We use Back-UPS by APC in my office; they work fine. The shutdown software worked in OS 9 but we haven’t really played with it since going to X, so I can’t vouch for that aspect. The only problem I’ve had with the model we use is that some of the sockets are a mere inch off the ground and susceptible to flooding — put ‘em up higher if you’re concerned about water!

I have an APC UPS as well (I think it’s the 500W model). It comes with OS X software and it’s been battle-tested at the house several times.

Last February I started looking at using my old PowerMac G4 (dual 500mhz, gigabit ethernet model) as a live backup server since I’d moved to the PowerBook full time for development. Nine months later, I’ve finally done it! I know several people t…

IF you want true protection do not use APC. they are off line and provide very little conditioning. get a MGE EXRT serie it is a double conversion ups.
