Domains by Proxy?

August 18, 2005

Anyone have good/bad things to say about Domains by Proxy? If I were to use them, I could save $50/year by not needing my PO Box.

I used them for a while without any problems, but then I got cheap when I renewed my domain and decided to drop them. And honestly, I haven’t noticed a difference since. But if you feel the need to hide your home address or even your name, it’s a decent service.

The CEO’s torture comments are enough to make me not want to do business with GoDaddy.
However, this story may be of interest – if it’s true, their DBP service isn’t all that great.

I have used a similar service with networksolutions.com (private registration=$9 per year). I recently renewed and did not add it on for similar reasons to matt’s comment.

After glancing over their site, it appears all they do is substitute their info for yours, creating a “private” registration (using Godaddy as the registrar). Is this the same as the $9.95 “Private” registration Godaddy (and most other registrars) will provide for you themselves, or have I missed a key point?

Most accredited registrars provide a WHOIS privacy type service concealing your actual info for an additional few cents a year. Just find a decent registrar and not bother using a man in the middle.

    Alex,

Maybe I’m missing something, but… your domain name is just your full name with .org added to it, right? You’ve also mentioned many times about living in Colorado. That coupled with King Design, and honestly, it wouldn’t be very hard to find out your personal information.

That being said, with a domain name that is just your real name with .org added, why are you interested in hiding your registration information anyway?

If you got support phone calls on your cell phone in the middle of the night from people who got your phone number from your WHOIS record, you might consider it as well.

Be aware that Domains by Proxy does not protect you from being subpoenaed. Even a normal police officer can call them up and your privacy is gone.

    Go offshore! For example http://www.anonymous[...]_domain.aspx

Privacy in the US with a US registrar…just impossible. Don’t get yourself foold by GoDaddy!

I’m also using Domains by Proxy and feel it’s a great service. My domain name is also my full name followed by a .com, but I think it is convenient and more economical to whois out anyone’s home address than pay $15 to some website. So, I feel Domains by Proxy provides me some – but not all – protection.

I really don’t think that paying for private whois masking is worth it. I would rather just use a fake address, like 123 main street. Though I am thinking of offering a free service for people to use my PO box for WHOIS masking ;)

be aware and stay away from domainsbyproxy.com

    scam warning

they work on stealing domains less than 100000 in alexa rank

they will first hide your informations then hide your login details and you will lose the ability to change the privacy forever and after that they will ask you for 370$ if you want to get back your account with them and sometimes they registered your domain by their name

    stay away from those scammers

We’d been using Domains by Proxy for a number of domains … the gent who set it up for us left the company and we had an absolutely horrible time trying to retrieve the access information for the account.

So yeah – if you’re into good customer service, this company is not for you! If you DO use them, make SURE you have all the pertinent information for the account!!

i accepted godaddys offer of 1 yr free privacy via domainsbyproxy. I didn’t expect cancelling privacy just before renewal next year would be almost impossible. They took really serious effort in making such cancelling very very hard. Throughout the year I registered 500+ domains in about 20-30 sessions, which made like 20-30 DIFFERENT DBP accounts! so if you want to cancel, it is not possible to do it all at once. You have to remember / find in emails all your accounts numbers, then login separately for each of them, then manually check every domain, then confirm twice. If you ARE SO UNLUCKY as I was and happen to misspel login password once, they block your account immediately and only way to get it unblocked is to call u.s. support by phone!!! You have to have ready your godaddy account number and pin, your dbp account numbers, and they let you wait 3 blank minutes on the phone for every account unblocking or any service you might ask them. they say it is because your account is SOO private and SOO protected that they have to ask another personal supervision of the action taken. i think just load of crap. they are just teaching you to never ever to call them again. Took me couple of hours to get rid of privacy from godaddy for my domains and still they ripped me off for couple of hundreds usd since i didnt make it in time due to blocked accounts! BIG WARNING to everyone — it is just not worth it. I think this business have strong signs of planned ripoff and thats why I hate it. If it would be possible to cancel the privacy in godaddys domain center by selecting all the domains and then by one click to turn it off, like the other “services” they offer, then I wouldnt say a word. But that is is not the case.

What a crock… They offer free privacy through a sister company then make near impossible to remove when it comes time to renew. After 40+ minutes most of which was hold time, I spoke with a supervisor who eventually agreed to credit me for the year of privacy so I would have sufficient time to jump through the hoops to cancel the privacy… It only took a checkbox to add it, it should only take a check box to remove it…

I made the mistake of taking this service through Godaddy for one of my customer’s domains and the customer decided he did not want it. So far I have been unable to cancel the service. They have come up with excuse after excuse as to why their cancellation procedures are not working. At ths point I don’t care about the money, I just want this thing gone! Most recently they informed me that I needed to unlock my domain at Godaddy before their cancellation procedure would work. I unlocked the domain at Godaddy, check to make sure it had taken effect and then went back to their site to do the cancellation and it still did not work, even though I tried it over and over again! I went back to Godaddy and re-locked the domain because I don’t trust these guys at Domains by Proxy. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can get rid of this?

They have awful customer service. DO NOT USE! We have an ongoing issue yet to be resolved and have been ignored in our requests to speak with a live person from this company… All of their calls simply get routed to GoDaddy, who could not help us. We asked to speak with someone from Domains by Proxy and were told “no”. Unbelievable.

    Hmmm…

I wonder how many millions of dollars GoDaddy has made via Domains By Proxy, setting up this separate service, with a separate account number and password, requiring a whole other set of hoops to jump through, should you wish to cancel services.

The nuisance factor keeps you paying for it. Meaning, I’d rather not spend an hour, trying to avoid paying the dang $8 fee. I’ll just pay the darn thing.

Wonder how many thousands of people got suckered (like me) into this Parsonian black hole?

Yup, clearly designed to make a lot of people go “Screw it, I do not have time for this!”, and just pay.

Extremely cynical of Godaddy to intentionally made so badly just to squeeze extra out of the cash cow.

Woops, error in editing [late here].

If possible, can you alter this:

Extremely cynical of Godaddy to intentionally made so badly just to squeeze extra out of the cash cow.

    to this:

I just had a horrible experience with GoDaddy while trying to cancel my account. Domains by Proxy is HORRIBLE. I would not recommend it. I am also canceling GoDaddy because I feel like I am constantly being invaded with marketing deals. I want SIMPLE SIMPLE SIMPLE, and I don’t want to be marketed at. Their web site is like a badly-designed Las Vegas LSD trip.

I am switching everything to AISO – They are solar/wind powered, and they have INSTANT customer service with real people. They are a bit awkward about a few things, but they are real, honest people, and we can talk through any problem.
