I used them for a while without any problems, but then I got cheap when I renewed my domain and decided to drop them. And honestly, I haven’t noticed a difference since. But if you feel the need to hide your home address or even your name, it’s a decent service.

The CEO’s torture comments are enough to make me not want to do business with GoDaddy.
However, this story may be of interest – if it’s true, their DBP service isn’t all that great.

I have used a similar service with networksolutions.com (private registration=$9 per year). I recently renewed and did not add it on for similar reasons to matt’s comment.

After glancing over their site, it appears all they do is substitute their info for yours, creating a “private” registration (using Godaddy as the registrar). Is this the same as the $9.95 “Private” registration Godaddy (and most other registrars) will provide for you themselves, or have I missed a key point?

Most accredited registrars provide a WHOIS privacy type service concealing your actual info for an additional few cents a year. Just find a decent registrar and not bother using a man in the middle.

Alex,
Maybe I’m missing something, but… your domain name is just your full name with .org added to it, right? You’ve also mentioned many times about living in Colorado. That coupled with King Design, and honestly, it wouldn’t be very hard to find out your personal information.
That being said, with a domain name that is just your real name with .org added, why are you interested in hiding your registration information anyway?

If you got support phone calls on your cell phone in the middle of the night from people who got your phone number from your WHOIS record, you might consider it as well.

Be aware that Domains by Proxy does not protect you from being subpoenaed. Even a normal police officer can call them up and your privacy is gone.
Go offshore! For example http://www.anonymous[...]_domain.aspx
Privacy in the US with a US registrar…just impossible. Don’t get yourself foold by GoDaddy!

I’m also using Domains by Proxy and feel it’s a great service. My domain name is also my full name followed by a .com, but I think it is convenient and more economical to whois out anyone’s home address than pay $15 to some website. So, I feel Domains by Proxy provides me some – but not all – protection.

I really don’t think that paying for private whois masking is worth it. I would rather just use a fake address, like 123 main street. Though I am thinking of offering a free service for people to use my PO box for WHOIS masking

be aware and stay away from domainsbyproxy.com
scam warning
they work on stealing domains less than 100000 in alexa rank
they will first hide your informations then hide your login details and you will lose the ability to change the privacy forever and after that they will ask you for 370$ if you want to get back your account with them and sometimes they registered your domain by their name
stay away from those scammers

We’d been using Domains by Proxy for a number of domains … the gent who set it up for us left the company and we had an absolutely horrible time trying to retrieve the access information for the account.
So yeah – if you’re into good customer service, this company is not for you! If you DO use them, make SURE you have all the pertinent information for the account!!

i accepted godaddys offer of 1 yr free privacy via domainsbyproxy. I didn’t expect cancelling privacy just before renewal next year would be almost impossible. They took really serious effort in making such cancelling very very hard. Throughout the year I registered 500+ domains in about 20-30 sessions, which made like 20-30 DIFFERENT DBP accounts! so if you want to cancel, it is not possible to do it all at once. You have to remember / find in emails all your accounts numbers, then login separately for each of them, then manually check every domain, then confirm twice. If you ARE SO UNLUCKY as I was and happen to misspel login password once, they block your account immediately and only way to get it unblocked is to call u.s. support by phone!!! You have to have ready your godaddy account number and pin, your dbp account numbers, and they let you wait 3 blank minutes on the phone for every account unblocking or any service you might ask them. they say it is because your account is SOO private and SOO protected that they have to ask another personal supervision of the action taken. i think just load of crap. they are just teaching you to never ever to call them again. Took me couple of hours to get rid of privacy from godaddy for my domains and still they ripped me off for couple of hundreds usd since i didnt make it in time due to blocked accounts! BIG WARNING to everyone — it is just not worth it. I think this business have strong signs of planned ripoff and thats why I hate it. If it would be possible to cancel the privacy in godaddys domain center by selecting all the domains and then by one click to turn it off, like the other “services” they offer, then I wouldnt say a word. But that is is not the case.

What a crock… They offer free privacy through a sister company then make near impossible to remove when it comes time to renew. After 40+ minutes most of which was hold time, I spoke with a supervisor who eventually agreed to credit me for the year of privacy so I would have sufficient time to jump through the hoops to cancel the privacy… It only took a checkbox to add it, it should only take a check box to remove it…
