I was wrong when I said you can’t tether a BlackBerry as a modem in Parallels. You can tether in Parallels, you just have to disable your PocketMac drivers first.
Move the BlackberryUSB*.kext folders out of the /System/Library/Extensions folder, restart, then you can connect to your BlackBerry in Parallels with no problem.
This is great, until there is a solution for tethering in OS X (the bounty is up to $560), at least I don’t have to reboot into BootCamp to connect in a pinch.

Hi Alex - I wonder if you could use Internet Connection sharing to share the connection back to the Mac.

Alex adds this Comment:
Yep, that is the next thing I need to try. For it to work, I think the VM needs to have an IP that the Mac can access - I hope that it is possible.

Hey folks - so, if you’re trying to get your Blackberry to connect in the Windows VM and you have PocketMac installed, simply do the following before you start Parallels:
In Terminal: sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/BlackberryUSB.kext
After you exit Parallels do the following in Terminal:
sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/BlackberryUSB.kext
You should be good to go with USB Blackberry usage in Parallels and with PocketMac in OS X with these steps.

Tim, the kextunload never worked for me… it reported that the exension was unloaded successfully but when I ran Parallels and connected the Blackberry USB device I still got the “This device is in use” message. Moving it to a different folder did the trick, so I’m happy.
Alex, I got it working from my Mac! In Parallels/Windows, share the BroadbandAccess/NationalAccess dial-up connection over the network card. On the Mac, make sure Sharing is turned off, and configure the Paralells Network Adapter to use DHCP. From the shell you should then be able to ping 192.168.0.1 (which is the Windows system). Once you establish a dial-up connection, you should be able to browse the Internet from Safari. In fact, I am posting this over a tethered Blackberry connection on my 7130e Verizon Blackberry!

Using 1862 Parallels w/Win2K and a 7105T, I can get Windows to show a Blackberry Device, but the Desktop Manager will not show a connection, nor will the Blackberry Device Manager. Ugh.
Any ideas? No PocketMac as I sync to my PC laptop.

I’m still stuck on getting Parallels to dial properly. I’ve confirmed the settings, BB Desktop connects my 8700g, and I click Dial. Nothing happens on my BB and the attempt times out. Can anyone fill me in on what else (if anything) parallels needs to connect?
Thanks.

Hi everyone, I am new to this blog… I have been reading about this exact issue everywhere for about 2 weeks… I got a new macbook with OS X 10.4.7. Then went to Verizon to get my blackberry activated for EVDO. I have the 7250 currently on verizon network.
Did anyone put together that “HOW TO” using Parallels to get it working… I see that some of you got it working, but I still cannot seem to get the USB port connected in Parallel PC using Window XP. I get the error that my USB port is connected to another device on my Mac OS, and I dont know how to release this… or what setting it needs to be in for my Parallel PC to recognize it.
I am very interested in adding 50.00 for the support of a program to get this working as my work requires I have the blackberry, but I love my Mac..
I guess my question is, how to release my USB port for that parallel pc can see my blackberry and use my PC desktop manager.
I am working with Mark at PocketMac as for whatever reason my brand new computer will not install pocketmac for BB even though I am using the new IntelDuo update version he suggested…

*********
Do you mean turn off Bridged Networking and put into Host Only Networking mode on Parallel PC, when u are referring to DHCP on the Paralells Network Adapter setting in Edit panel?

Sorry for the delay in responding. I haven’t had time to do a very detailed step-by-step, but I did check the description I wrote and it looks accurate.
Parallels needs to be set up as “Host-only networking”. If you check in Windows, the IP address of the Parallels network card should be 192.168.0.1
On the Mac side, go to System Preferences, Network, and choose “Parallels Host-Guest Adapter” - it should be set to use DHCP and the IP address should be in the 192.168.0.XXX range. If not, click on the Renew DHCP Lease button.

Kyrocera has an EVDO router available. As far as I know it supports phones with EVDO and a USB port. Has anyone used this router that could let me know the viability of using it with the Blackberry?
At $250.00 USD its not as cheap as a software soulution and has to be plugged into an outlet.

Hi:
I really appreciate this thread, as I’ve been trying to tether since I bought my macbook a couple of months ago. I still can’t get it to work following the instructions. For some reason, the parallels network card shows an IP address of 10.37.129.3. Can this be changed to the right address? (renewing the address doesnt work). Thanks for any suggestions.
Best,
Gary K.

I have managed to change the DNS, but still doesnt work. Interestingly, the port is recognized, and the BB is recognized in the device in the device manager. the only things that won’t recognize are the VZ software and BB manager. (I’m using a 7130e). Oh well–may the next release will work.

I’m also not able to get the Sprint PCS Connection app to see the 7130e . It always says, connect your phone.
I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the Sprint software a dozen times, XP sees the blackberry when I attach it to my mac, but still the connection manager never does.
I have the vm set to host only and enabled the host only nic on the mac, then can ping each other… I’m running osx 10.4.7 and parallels build 1884 RC (sept 5).
When I boot the mac to the XP partition it works just fine, just not from the vm image.

Update:
1) download and install version of the blackberry desktop manager (40033dt-en, from www.sprint.com/downloads | blackberry)
2) download and install the latest Sprint Connection Manager (from the same site), uncheck the “blackberry drivers” during the install
3) start the BBDM, let it detect and connect to the blackberry (leave it running)
4) start SCM, it detects the phone and then I was able to connect to the Sprint PCS.
To share that XP connection in MAC:
I changed my primary connection on the MAC to the host only nic and then I enabled ICS on the sprint connection in XP. From MAC I did a renew and it got the 192.168.x.x from XP. I could then share the internet connection from both OSX and XP. Woohoo.

In March the IT guy in my business told me he paid Verizon $15 a month on top of his regular Blackberry data plan and was able to tether his Blackberry to his laptop to use the Internet via the Blackberry, not dialing with it as a modem. He downloaded a piece of software from Verizon called VZ Access Manager, installed it, chose the National Access/Broadband choice, clicked CONNECT and voila, he was on the Internet. In areas with EV-DO he was at quite acceptable speeds for working.
I thought this was too good to be true so called Verizon and found this was actually available for my MacBook. I downloaded the software, chose Mac OS X and the Blackberry options and connected while still talking with the tech support person at Verizon. The whole operation took less than 10 minutes.
The past 6 weeks have been heaven. I could pull off the road, open my laptop and work on strange Web applications that were almost impossible to handle with my Blackberry (7250) alone.
A week or so ago, this all stopped cold. At the same time my phone gave only a busy signal to callers and did not ring on my end. Yesterday I called Verizon to try to get both problems fixed. They had me download and reinstall the software to make my phone ring again. In the process, my VZ Access Manager software quit working. The technician had me re-download this, and the choice of a Blackberry was no longer available. Only the Motorola Q was available under PDA’s or phones.
As you can imagine, I am devistated. A Verizon person has tried to tell me it was a freak accident that I could ever connect and that Verizon does not support Blackberry use with a Mac laptop. I smell a rat here, because Blackberry was a choice for my software when I downloaded this in March. It certainly worked fine for 6 weeks. The technician told me it was a driver issue.
If anyone has a clue what I can do to get this access back again, I will be MOST appreciative!!!!
