I’ve released version 1.3 of my Share This plugin for WordPress. This version has two main changes:
- Support for a Share This link in feeds via a custom page that presents the Share This information along with the post content. This also works for mobile visitors and visitors that have JavaScript disabled in their browser.
- The addition of the Share Icon to the link - on by default.
Here is a screenshot of the Share This custom page:
This screenshot has some of my own custom styling that I applied through the ‘akst_head’ hook (which I added to allow you to customize/override the CSS of the Share This page via plugin).
The icon is, of course, the icon from the Share Icon project (which I launched the web site for yesterday).
I’d also like to thank the folks that sent in a donation after my little plea when I released my Articles plugin. When I receive a few donations like this, it makes it much easier to spend the time necessary to package up these plugins and make them freely available. Any little amount is appreciated - perhaps I should try resurrecting the $1 donation for each download concept again. I still think that’s an idea that could work. If even a fraction of folks who download would do it, it would work out well for everyone.
The download is available on my WordPress Plugins page.
If you have any trouble with this, please open a thread in the WP Support Forums and send me the link.

I love this, but I’m currently using FeedBurner’s FeedFlare thing. Can you add a Share This element to FeedFlare?

It would take some work, I’d probably need someone to be willing to fund the development of that feature.

Well since you put it that way Alex, what would be the “funding” necessary to develop or enhance some other plugins for WordPress? I would come with open pocket for that kind of help from someone of your caliber.

I offer development services (billed hourly) through my business - that would probably be the best way.

Boo-ya! Thanks for adding mobile support. Donation thrown your way. Looking forward to Link Harvest as well.
A couple of remarks:
1) Why no Share This icon on the mobile page?
2) The article formatting for the mobile Share This page is a little spaced out, both from the left side and between lines. I’d recommend making this look more like the mobile pages. I may dig into the CSS…

Alex adds this Comment:
The mobile plugin doesn’t call
wp_head(), which is where all the CSS and JS is added in. I think it’s better without it.That really depends on your mobile browser - I have CSS turned off on mine (as is the default) for example. As I noted in the post above, there is a hook so you can create your own plugin to override the CSS on that page.

Hey thanks Alex. I totally forgot about your King Design site. What was the average time to create the Share-This plugin? Feel free to e-mail me a ballpark if possible.

Huh… I don’t know how to create a .PO file… Otherwise, I would have. Anyone, any suggestions? I’m on Windows, btw.

Hi Alex,
I tried an earlier version of the plugin and experienced some problems, however 1.3 worked right outta the box (so to speak) - and with the little icon too!
Thanks so much for a brilliant plugin!

Very nice plugin - appreciate the time that you’ve taken to write and share it.
I’ve added it to my site and I’ve also added it to my huge Wordpress Plug-ins/Add-ons page that I know several people reference.
Merry Christmas and thanks again.

Rob P adds this Comment:
I just installed this plugin, it is great, thanks for the effort you put in.
I noticed one problem though. When I tested in IE7, I noticed that there were javascript errors (on my site and yours) and that the Share This link was not bringing up the form.
I looked at prototype.js and noticed that you were using 1.5.0 RC1, so I tried the latest stable version 1.4.0 and it worked in both Firefox 2.0 and IE7. You may want to replace prototype.js with the one from http://prototype.con[...]ype-1.4.0.js until the bug is fixed in 1.5

Sean Higgins adds this Comment:
I love the Share This plug-in, however, I really loved it when it didn’t take me to an entirely new page but was just a pop-up (like it currently still is on your blog). How can I change it back to the pop-up method instead of the new page?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Alex adds this Comment:
Rob P - thanks, should be fixed (I hope) in 1.3.1.
Sean - please see the updated FAQ in the README.

What’s the best way to keep the share-this pages from being indexed by spiders. I’m going to try adding “Disallow: /akst_action=share-this” to robots.txt but any thoughts on this is appreciated. Google is indexing these pages and I think I’m getting a duplicate content punishment for it.

Alex adds this Comment:
I think there may be a little FUD here. In a standard WordPress install, your content is already duplicated numerous times:
1. Permalink
2. Home page and “paged” history view when it rolls of the history page.
3. Year archive view
4. Month archive view
5. Day archive view
6. Category archive view (* # of categories you place the post in)
Anyone who uses a tagging plugin could add an additional n views for the tags on each post.
In addition, my 1.x mobile edition plugin created alternate URLs for mobile versions of the content and I never heard of any penalties because of it.

Hi Alex,
thank you for this great plugin! I lik the idea a lot. I’ve implemented it on my Dutch site and written a small post about it.
I changed your plugin a bit: Dutch texts (of course) and I added a field for the to name, added a reference to the Share This post and added blogname and blogdescription to the e-mail footer. If you like I can post you the changed file.

Dear Theo Bakker,
Thanks for creating the Dutch translation. But why don’t you share the translation. It’s not on your site full of google adds, in which you give advise on how to web 2.0. Even not in your downloads section. Tell me, really what’s wrong here.
