Category Overload 1.0

Posted in: News, WordPress

Category Overload provides an alternate administrative interface for managing categories in WordPress. This was developed for Dave Powers’ New Music Nation web site, who had over 1200 (nested) categories and the volume of categories was causing pages to fail to load, server lock-ups, etc.

When managing categories in your WordPress admin interface, Category Overload shows only one level of categories and only 50 per level at a time (paged). It replaces the standard category management interface for WordPress.

If you’ve got a lot of categories, Category Overload may be a solution for you.

The download and more information are available on my WordPress Plugins page.

If you have any trouble with this, please open a thread in the WP Support Forums and send me the link.

Wow, this is a great new plugin. I put it on my site and it made managing my categories easier. Now I don’t even have 1200 categories (close to 10-15), but this still makes it a lot easier.

I can see this being really useful for some of the book sites I visit. Thanks for this, I’ll be sure to pass the word to anyone with a large amount of categories. :)

I developed a plugin that goes along with this, but it allows you to condense your categories from many to few (for example: 25 categories to 8 categories)

I was just about to give Timothy an advert for his “Category Converter” plugin but I see he beat me to it (see above)!

It really is a great plugin to help evolve the WP blogs that have been out there for a while, to help bloggers clean up categories that they thought were useful at the time but years later find that they only really posted twice :p

I have a greasemonkey script for making categories a bit easier to use. I use it with 600 categories on my blog.

This appears to be broken in WP2.5.1 - no categories are displayed in the ‘Manage Categories’ screen, while all categories are still listed on the post screen. Pity, as it was a very useful plugin!
