Yes, it’s a problem, but ease of implementation will always trump best practices. Want a better solution? Get a standard going, get it adopted by publishers and get plugins created for all platforms to support it; then you might see some change. What, that sounds hard? Yeah…

I’m actually curious what kinds of solutions the brilliant minds of the internet could come up with. That’s how we got OpenID, which isn’t yet trumping the ease of implementing username/password pairs, but some change is happening.
