WP Mobile Edition 2.1

Posted in: News, WordPress

I’ve updated my WordPress Mobile Edition plugin. I’ve made a couple of changes:

  • Since many people don’t RTFM, I’ve added some code that (hopefully) only tries to show the mobile theme if everything is installed correctly.
  • If it’s not installed correctly, it will show an error message accordingly in WP 2.5+.
  • Experimental: a link to explicitly enter the mobile interface - requires cookies.

This plugin creates a PDA friendly interface for your blog. You can see it in action by visiting this site in a mobile browser. If your mobile browser is not automatically detected, get your browser details here and let me know.

This plugin could use some CSS now that mobile browsers are supporting them better. Send me your submissions if you’d like to contribute.

The download and more information are available on my WordPress Plugins page.

If you have any trouble with this, please open a thread in the WP Support Forums and send me the link.

UPDATE: Version 2.1.1 is now available and should work better than version 2.1. :)

Before installing this, can you confirm that this plugin does not conflict with wp-super-cache? In theory, is it possible that a mobile user will visit a post that is not cached, triggering wp-super-cache to save a cached version of the page based on the mobile output, resulting in subsequent regular web visitors being fed the cached mobile version?

I think it probably does “conflict”. Patches welcome.

Just an observation - not a complaint. When navigating to the README ( http://alexking.org/[...]t=share-this ) there’s no text on my mobile - just the stats stuff. Why?

I don’t want to come over all sloppy and sycophantic or anything, but I love this plugin.
Simple, straightforward, does exactly what it says it should.

This doesn’t seem to work with wp 2.5 for some reason. The previous 2.0 works seamlessly as David mentioned.

a)Anyone know how to deactivate the mobile conversion feature, yet keep “moblogging” working? :)

    b) shari: It means “Read the F* Manual”..but in this case I guess it must mean read the readme…didn’t see a manual anywhere.

Shari — RTFM dates back to yer grandpappy’s day.

    …I’m guessing. If you’re 80, scratch that. ;)

Okay, it dates back at least to WWII.

Oh, wait. Maybe I’m thinking of “FUBAR”. Dang “F”ed up slang….

Echoing others’ comments: it doesn’t work with my WP 2.5 site.

Additional bit of info: going to the site on my Nokia N95 8GB, it starts loading the mobile version and then switches to the normal site.

    Caching on the phone, maybe?

First of all, thank you for the awesome tools.

I used the initial mobile plugin for a site I am working on. I also used the “sharethis” plugin.

Many likely know this, but if you install the classic version of “sharethis”, you can use it just for mobile themes (since they don’t use javascript typically) and you can just put the javascript code for the newer version on any other themes you have without actually installing the new plugin. That way all platforms are covered. Works flawlessly for me.

One suggestion is to perhaps format the sharethis classic page for the mobile version. (Theme specific css page of course.)
    Just some ideas and thoughts.
    Thanks again,
    Charlie
