I’ve officially released Tasks 2.0!
This release brings all the improvements that were made in Tasks Pro™ back to the single user version. The Tasks 2.0 license is priced at $29.95 and there is a 21 Day Free Trial available for you to test out all the changes and improvements (except file uploads which are disabled in the trial).
Here is a partial list of new features:
- Built-in Security – Keep your data private without having to edit server configuration files.
- Notes – Store ideas and related information anywhere in the tree.
- File Uploads – Attach files to tasks and notes.
- Time Tracking – Keep track of how long you spend on each task.
- Preferences/Settings – No more editing a text file to change your settings.
- Better Performance – Pages load about 5 times faster on average.
- Unlimited URLs – No more 3 URL limit.
- RSS Feeds – Monitor status on specific tasks and let others do the same.
- Auto-expand on Home Page – View your home page with the tasks already expanded up to 4 levels deep.
- Sort by Due Date – Proper sorting by due date on the home screen, tree view and list views.
- Edit Multiple Tasks – Select multiple tasks in the list views and apply changes to all of them at once.
- Themes – Choose from supplied options or make your own.
- Friendly Install Script – A great installer including an ‘upgrade from tasks 1.x’ option.
- Improved Documentation – Tasks 2.0 includes real documentation, not just an FAQ.
Thank you to all my great beta testers, I appreciate the help getting this ready to go over the last few months.
If you donated $10 or more during the Tasks 1.x development, you should have received an e-mail with a discounted price. If you didn’t receive the e-mail, please let me know and I’ll get you the discount.

Tasks Released
Alex has just released the new version of Tasks, Tasks 2.0.
Tasks 2.0 is the evolution of the standalone version of Tasks 1.x; it’s the functionality of Tasks Pro leveraged for single-user use. Much more importantly, it’s priced for a single …
Well, my trackback isn’t working properly. WordPress + Windows = nothing works. Anyways, big time kudos on releasing, what is I am sure, a fine product. You do great work.
Ordered.
Thanks guys, I appreciate the support. 🙂
Ordered. Can I run two installations on the same server – one for expirimenting, and the other for actual use?
I don’t have a problem with that. Officially the license is for one installation, but I’d have a staging install as well if I were experimenting.
Just trying out Tasks2.0 – just wanted to know, till what period of time do I get free updates after purchasing it, and also – what features are planned in upcoming releases?
My plan is to have a nonimal upgrade charge for major new functionality with all bug fixes and minor feature upgrades for free. For example. Tasks Pro 1.1 was a free upgrade.
The current plan is to add recurring tasks and task templates in the next major upgrade then reporting after that. Of course there are a bunch of other smaller features that will be added as well – I have a very long list. 🙂
If I mention Gantt charts I die, right?
Okay. I won’t.
They might be in the reporting release, maybe one after. Before I can do Gantt charts I have to have dependancies and estimated and actual durations. Frankly I think keeping track of all that data makes most any system too slow to use, I like the ‘keep is simple’ approach.
Let’s save Gantt charts for Tasks Pro Slow — for now if I want to buy MS-Project I can.
What I like about Tasks is how lightweight it is, plus the elegant UI.
Personal Project and Task Manager Software
I have always used some kind of database application to track tasks and to-dos (and sometimes billing when I’ve been consulting), from the first custom application I wrote in the 1980’s in Paradox for DOS, to a Filemaker database in the early 1990’s…
Tasks 2.0
Tasks 2.0 is out as of this afternoon and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to keep track of things in their lives. Sure you can use todos in your palm or iCal or some similar software, but the flexibility and strenghs of Tasks are too great to …
[…] When I first released Tasks Pro™ in February 2004 and the commercial version of Tasks in May 2004, I had a baseline of features and was offering my first commercial software so I set the price accordingly. I was more interested in gaining customers (and seeing if I could make a living doing this) than I was in getting the most money from each sale. […]
