One of the things I really like about the ShareThis.com team is the attitude they have about putting the needs of the user/publisher first.
When we talked about the new version of ShareThis that would be a widget and offer all the new features in version 2.0, we also realized that not everyone would want to switch to a widget based solution. Because of this, we have an updated version of the original Share This plugin that is still available – now called ShareThis Classic.
For those of you who have had trouble positioning the new ShareThis widget or need internationalization features now1, you can use the ShareThis Classic plugin for WordPress. The ShareThis Classic plugin adds three new and often requested features that were not in version 1.4:
- the ability to choose which tabs you want to display
- which order you’d like the tabs to display in
- Facebook as a Social Web option
These options are, of course, all available in ShareThis 2.0 as well. The 2.0 version is definitely the future of ShareThis, and it’s the version that gives you tracking stats, allows users to set their preference data, etc. However if you prefer the old version for whatever reason, upgrading to ShareThis Classic 1.5.1 is probably a good choice.
I think it’s great that the ShareThis team realized this could be an issue for some people, and we were able to work with them to take the necessary steps to address it by updating the Classic plugin.
There has been some great feedback in the comments on my ShareThis 2.0 post, and I can assure you that people are working hard to address the areas you’d like to see improved.
There are some additional strings that need to be translated in version 1.5.x compared to version 1.4, but there are localization files for version 1.4 available that may be useful to you.
- Localization options will be coming to the new ShareThis in the future. [back]

Great News! I tried Share-This 2.0, but I felt that it takes some time to load, may be due to tracking. So I switched back to the old version. Let me try this 😀
Alex,
Great plug-in. I am currently now running it on my site and it looks great, thanks again for your hard work and anyone else that contributed.
From all non-english users 🙂 :
Keep us informed when you have updated the PO file.
I’ll make my translation available in French.
Thanks for this great plugin !
Could you tell us exactly where to put the po & mo once these are translated ?

Hi Alex – thanks so much for this new/old version of the plugin 🙂 I’ve managed to install it and display it on my blog…
However, I can’t seem to get the pop-up to work. I’d mucked about with the protype file while trying the other Share-This versions so I reloaded prototype from the newest version of wordpress (this is the version of wordpress that I am running), and I have ” in my footer.php file, so I’m at a bit of a loss as to why it isn’t working. Any insight? 😀
Alex,
The reason it does not display for many, is because of an Access Denied script error in IE, on line 1. In Firefox, this isn’t an issue.

Alex, great plugin and thanks for maintaining 1.5. The reason I’m using 1.5 instead of 2.0 is because I couldn’t figure out how to force the widget to fit on the same line as other post footer content, and, more importantly, with the plugin version, no longer could disable auto-output and manually place the link and form on my page. Hope that makes sense. 1.5 works like a charm.
dharma – expect an update to ShareThis 2.0 soon that gives you those options.
Hi Alex, when going to the ShareThis site to download the WP plugin, it mentions only WP 2.2 and older compatibility.
Which version works with WP2.3 (or WP2.4 as that will be out in 2 months 🙂
Cheers, Bike

Hi Alex,
I love your ShareThis plugin! Right now I’m using ShareThis Classic 1.5.1 on WordPress 2.2.3.
When I have Javascript turned off, the ‘?p=’ page only seems to works for posts and not pages
I click the link from a “page”, I get a blank page.
Oddly, both pages and posts work fine for the pop-up window.
Does you know of a way to fix this? Thank you.
– Shawna
Could be a bug, we’ll check it out. Thanks.
I think I may have resolved the problem with pages when viewing ShareThis without Javascript (I don’t want to use the pop-up).
On line 967 of ShareThis Classic, I replaced:
query_posts(‘p=’.$id);
with
if(query_posts(‘p=’.$id) || query_posts(‘page_id=’.$id))
This seems to have done the trick. I’d love to know what you think because I want to be sure I didn’t break something else without know it.
Thank you,
– Shawna
I too am glad you are keeping the old version. Seems version 2.0 breaks a function of my site. When enabled I cannot get Advanced Navigation to work in any K2 based theme. The other thing was that I only wanted the ShareThis icon to appear in Posts only and/or on very specific static pages. The Classic version allows this.
If I read one of your comments correctly, it seems this might be added to 2.0, if so I might migrate back to 2.x
Thanks for a great plugin.
Where to put the mo and the po files for translation ?
Please send them to me and I’ll add them to the public SVN.
But where to put the .mo file ?
I put a ‘share-this-fr_FR.mo’ file in the same folder as ‘share-this.php’, but ShareThis always appear in english.
Hello Alex,
Would be great to receive an answer on the localisation files … Your plugin is so great, but we can’t put it on our websites just because of the translation, which is sad…
Thanks a lot for your help. I’m also interested in Bruno’s question.
Here’s some information on how to localize a plugin:
http://weblogtoolsco[...]sing-poedit/
Go ahead and send me the files once you’ve got them ready and I’ll add them to the plugin.
I think there’s something wrong with the ShareThis-plugin itself. Translations don’t to work.
Replacing the line:
load_plugin_textdomain(‘alexking.org’);
by:
load_plugin_textdomain(‘share-this’,$path = ‘wp-content/plugins/share-this’);
and name the file as share-this-xx_XX.po
works for me.
Thanks Bruno!
Was somebody able to translate this tricky part:
“Thanks, we\’ve sent this article to your recipients via e-mail. Return to original page.”
I couldn’t get the translation work with it’s apostrophes/quotes and the variable. Seems like the text has to splitted?
Yes, that line should be split this way:
__(‘Thanks, we\’ve sent this article to your recipients via e-mail.’, ‘share-this’) . ‘<a href=”‘.get_permalink($post_id).'”>’ . __(‘Return to original page’, ‘share-this’) . ‘</a>.’
By the way, does anyone know what kind of features were added in 1.5x compared to 1.4? I guess it’s something related to tracking, however ShareThis.com says that tracking is not available for the classic Share This plugin. So, what’s the difference?
Version 1.5.x adds an options page to allow people to easily choose which tabs to show, and which tab should be active on initial display.
Thanks for your reply, Alex!
