It’s been a few months since I was hoping to buy a 17″ PowerBook and it sounds like they are still a little ways out. Not only that, but the speed increase in the new models doesn’t seem that great…
I wonder if it will make sense to skip this generation too; though if I wait for something too dramatic I run the risk of suffering early adopter pains. 🙁
Why not just get one of the current generation?
I have a 1ghz TiBook, the current machines are not a big enough speed increase to make it worth it.
I hear that CPU speed is not the big factor in the speed of a notebook these days. I’ve been looking at Windows-based notebooks and have found that there are processors (Centrino) specific to notebooks as well as new buses that deliver the high end performance you need. A 2GHz plus processor is not really what you’re looking for.
At least, that’s what I’m told. Don’t know if this rationale holds true with Macs.
That’s true when you’re comparing different types of processors (Centrino vs. Pentium or Pentium vs. G4 for example), but not when you’re comparing the same type of processor.
Close Enough
The new 17" PowerBooks are hereby deemed a significant enough upgrade for me to take the long awaited plunge. After Jason’s experience with hard drive speed in his PowerBook, I’ll definitely be getting the faster hard drive option, but the r…
