I spent the afternoon and evening re-doing and labelling all of the wiring under my desk, installing sound absorbing foam and hooking up the Quad in its permanent home1. I can’t believe I spent ~5 hours doing all this. Unfortunately, I’m going to need to do a little more work to get the PowerMac G4…

After the RAM failed the first two times I tried to get it all installed, I wasn’t too optimistic when I received my second set of RMA’d DIMMs today. So far, things seem to be working ok with the additional RAM. My saga went something like this: Order and receive 4GB (4 x 1GB DIMM)…

I used Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) in a multi-step process to replace one of the disks in my RAID array, and it worked like an absolute champ! I used CCC twice in the process, once to clone the existing RAID drive to an external drive, then the second time to clone the external drive back…

The RSS ads were an interesting failed experiment: 20 days, 10 clicks. Ouch! I’ve removed the ads until they prove relevant enough to be more than just an annoyance to my readers. Maybe I’ll check see if they’ve improved in a few months, or test out Google’s offering when they let me.

I bought the 100GB Seagate drive for $40 (after rebate from Circut City) and I’m going to use that as my intermediate disk to replace the WD drive with the Hitatchi in my RAID array. I only have ~65GB to transfer, so the Seagate will work just fine. Using a 4th drive for the transfer…

Steve and I were discussing yesterday’s conversation about scalability over dinner last night. He’d seen a few responses that I’d missed (mainly in the comments) and vice-versa. Subscribing to RSS feeds for comments on an individual post is a handy way to keep track of these conversations, but subscribing to each RSS feed is a…

The replacement RAM, new hard drive and external hard drive enclosure all arrived today on the same UPS shipment – I love it when everything comes together like that. I guess I’ll be playing with hardware this afternoon. The plan: Install new RAM and make sure it works. Put new Hitatchi HD in external enclosure.…

There is a great conversation going on about web applications and scalability, with FeedLounge as an example. A few months back, there was a meme going around talking about how cheap it was to build a web based application/service/company compared to our recent past. While this may be the case in various instances, the scalability…

The golden rule of comment spam tools should be: First and foremost, do not interrupt legitimate conversations. I tried to leave this comment: It isn’t supposed to make marketing sense, it’s supposed to make logical sense. We can’t offer the service period if we can’t cover the costs. 🙂 on this post. and received this…

I’ve posted a big entry over on the FeedLounge blog. It explains where FeedLounge is today, why the public release has been delayed, and how and when things are moving forward. This post is part of the project: FeedLounge. View the project timeline for more context on this post.

I’ve been using the keyboard and mouse that came with my Quad since I hooked it all up last week. Today I switched back to my previous keyboard and mouse. Using the Mighty Mouse was a really interesting experience for me. I was predisposed to dislike it as I’ve never liked the Apple Pro Mouse…

Smartphone Suckiness Syncing is one of those things that just doesn’t work very well. Ever. It seems easy enough, but it’s really incredibly complex to get it right. Syncing data between machines hasn’t been an issue for me over the last 3 years because my PowerBook has been my primary development machine. Now that I’m back on a desktop as my primary machine, it’s something I have to deal with again. Let’s take browser bookmarks as an example. I still want to keep…

Granted there was a bunch of snow this week, but the snow at Breckenridge today was a lot better than what we had at Keystone last week. I escaped with many fewer bumps and bruises. 🙂 I’ve got to remember to get my board waxed before my next trip – I keep getting stuck while…

I made a list of all the software I’m installing on my Quad (it was a checklist initially, but I thought it might be interesting to publish). Sorry, I’m not including links – too many to locate and paste in; use your favorite search engine. A lot of this stuff is also linked on my…
