Posted in: News, WordPress

I’ve released an update to my well-received Share This plugin. Version 1.1 has a couple of small changes:

  1. Fixed a typo that caused the Blinklist URL to be incorrect.
  2. Fixed a double = in the Furl URL.
  3. Abstracted the strings for easy translation.
  4. Changed the mechanism for creating the URLs so that it is compatible with more themes.

I also started a conversation a few days ago about a generic “share this” icon, an idea which folks seem to like but one that hasn’t gotten a lot of art contributions yet. Chris Pirillo let me know that he wrote of a similar desire a few months back. Chris’s description of an icon in the same general vein as the feed icon is more what I had in mind than some of the contributions I’ve seen so far. Let’s see some creativity!

The download is available on my WordPress Plugins page.

If you have any trouble with this, please open a thread in the WP Support Forums and send me the link.

This is a great plugin, thanks for the improvements. It’s so nice to have a way to let visitors share your posts without blinding them with the mess that is the myriad of icons. This does a great job of tucking all of that ugliness away unless someone really does want to share a post.

    Thanks again.

Hi Alex, first of all: I LOVE this plug-in. An icon would be nice, I suppose - I’ve used one from Fam fam fam which fits the K2 theme on my site.

And I hope that the K2 devs will integrate Share This in a way that the link appears somewhere near the Comments link. My PHP capabilities are far from sufficient enough for touching the theloop.php from K2 — I’ve tried a bit, but without success.

Nice. I’m excited to check this out. I’d already found and fixed the Furl and Blinklist errors and figured out how to bend my template into compatibility. I’m very curious to see what you’ve changed under the hood.

hey Alex, nice plugin! A couple of ideas for maximum flexibility…

put the auto output stuff and the social sites into an options page where you can set them from the admin panel vs modding the php code…

I dont mind editing the code, but makes upgrading to future versions more time consuming…

    Thanks!

I’ve created options like that for a number of my plugins, but I don’t think I’ll be doing so for this one. “Maximum flexibility” isn’t always worth the trade-offs.

Great plugin and does the job very well! I installed and then deactivated as it gets completely mixed with content. [shows at bottom but user does not differentiate it from content] It must stand highlighted (with an icon or >>> or something like that) from rest of the content :(

Btw, I like your theme on this site. It’s looking very nice.

Raj - no offense, but I think that’s one of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen. The P tag that has the link has a CSS classname (akst_link), add whatever styling you want to make it stand out. And if you bothered to read the FAQ, you’d see instructions on how to disable the auto-addition to the content and a template tag you could put wherever you want. Geesh - at least *try* to help yourselves people - how can Alex make something that works with every theme out there?

Bill - I appreciate the legwork on finding those solutions for Raj, let’s make sure to keep it friendly in here.

Just a reminder, support belongs in the WP forums, not in these blog comments.

  12. Ian D adds this Comment:

Alex - a big thank you from me. The plugin does what I always wanted - beautifies the ability of sharing my content. I didn’t like the other plugins due to the links to the many different sites appearing all over the page. The upgrade to 1.1 also makes it work on k2 and k2 derived themes.

I used a famfamfam icon and integrated it into my site via theloop.php. If anyone wants some guidance on how to do this I’m happy to help.

just a quick usability / ergonomy note : I find it would be more natural if the link “Share this” would toggle the panel instead of just opening it. Yes, I saw the “close” link.

  16. Iwo adds this Comment:

I love this plugin but it does not validate CSS because you can’t mix positions with keywords. I am referring to line 255 which said — background: url(’.$key.’.gif) no-repeat 2px center; — which I changed to:

    background: url(’.$key.’.gif) no-repeat center;
    background-position: 2px;

It now validates…I dont know if this is just a problem I had or if this is something that should be changed overall but I included the revised version of the plugin on my blog. Thanks for the awesome plugin Alex.

  17. Ben adds this Comment:

    FWIW I agree with Ozh

I keep clicking the “Share this” to close it as well. Otherwise the plugin is great. I intend to steal a number of ideas from it for my site :)

  18. Ja adds this Comment:

Not sure if this has been addressed already, but it seems that it doesn’t degrade too nicely when Javascript isn’t on or is blocked.

I get sent to your 404 page when clicking “Share This” for example.

I haven’t looked at the plugin myself so it may just be me, but if not you should really add in better degradation. If you get inspired, a css “popup” workaround is possible though I don’t know if the full range of features would be possible. Otherwise, replacing the link with a non-js alternative + a note about turning on js for full functionality of the site or something would do the trick.

Apologies if this has already been discussed.

    Alex,
Any plans to make a WP-Mobile-compatible version of this? The “share this” link shows up on the mobile page, but does nothing on most mobile browsers.

    thx for all the work!

Not really, I could disable it in the mobile theme I suppose.
