Does Share This Need an Icon?

Posted in: Share Icon, WordPress

I’ve gotten several e-mails about this one, so I’m putting it out there for discussion…

Does the “Share This” link need a standard icon to be more recognizable? And is there a generic “social bookmark” icon that has gained any sort of traction we could use? I don’t think I’ve seen one - so it can’t be that widely adopted yet if there is one.

Create your own “Share This” icon and post a link to it in the comments - the best one will get included in the next release. Please make sure to include a 16×16 version and 14×14 version in a pixel preserved format (gif, png) and release it under the GPL to be considered.

    Patrick,
these Icon ar pretty cool, but you could make them look more “web2.0″ :)

But to answer the question, for sure there is need for icons. And perhaps you can make the globally reconizable icon for social bookmarking as the guys for RSS did…

Oh, man. Is there going to be a new release? — Damn it. I just hacked to pieces the current version, to translate it into Romanian and make some other little changes and now I have to do it again.

Externalizing the text strings would be most useful. A lot more than an icon.

Another suggestion… the form placement should take account of the screen size or window size. I have to hack the source and add a -200 to the X offset, to prevent the form from creating horizontal scroll.

Other than that, an extraordinary plugin.

I like the plugin a lot and am thinking about adding it to my site.

I want to redo everything below the actual post content to add extra features and this would be ideal. I would say any graphics should be dependant upon the theme used, although some sort of standard could be good.

Patrick - Personally I am not keen on your icons. Sorry. The reason is that, whilst the ideas are good, the execution is lacking. The biggest issue being that the icons lack contrast and end up as a mess of grey when shrunk to 16*16 which will probably be the most popular size for blogs.

I don’t know why I didn’t abstract the strings - guess I just forgot while working on it. I can do that for a future release.

Ben - I understand… you’d almost need to work with that size in mind… so a “all encompasing globe.” probably wouldn’t work. I just threw them out there.

Hmmm too bad it’s so small (16 px) an arrow with shareit as the length would also work.

If you really want it to be universal, shouldn’t the requirment for the licence be publice domain so it can truly be freely used by all?

^^ This icon is really not bad. ^^
It’s taken from the Silk Icons Set available for free at famfamfam.com. but it’s released under CC and not GPL: http://www.famfamfam[...]/icons/silk/

I’ve used “Share This” on a site that I’m currently developing, and since I’m already using the FamFamFam set I opted for the following icon as it seems to be the best fit:

Of the Silk icons, something like this makes the most sense to me:

But I really think we’d be best served by trying to create a “feed icon” style mark.

Guys, the Silk Icon is nice but something unique that stands out on its own would be a lot better. I just wish I had the time to make something myself. Joe’s icon is a good step in the right direction (has the style of the feed icon) but it could use some work. I just wish I had the time to work on it!
